An eye-mountable device includes layer(s) of polymer material defining a body. The body includes a first side and a second side extending from a first end to a second end. The first side opposes the second side and curves inwardly toward the second side. The second side curves outwardly away from the first side. The body includes an anterior surface and a posterior surface extending from the first side to the second side and from the first end to the second end. The anterior side opposes the posterior side. The posterior surface has a concave shape. The device includes a substrate in the body including a mounting platform disposed proximally to a middle of the second side. The device includes, on the mounting platform, electronics that interact with a biological environment and monitor health-related information. The body may have a thickness profile that prevents the device from undesired movement.

Eye-mountable underlid device for measuring an analyte

Systems and methods for monitoring medication adherence and compliance are provided. A medication monitoring system may include a medication container, a cover, and a beacon system. The beacon system may include a beacon that transmits a wireless signal when the cover is removed from the medication container. A method for monitoring medication adherence and compliance may include detecting when a cover of a medication container is removed from the medication container. The method may further include transmitting based on the detection, a signal from a beacon to a remote device, which indicates the opening of the medication container.

Systems and methods for monitoring medication adherence and compliance

An eye-mountable composition, an eye-mountable device and a method for making the eye-mountable device are disclosed. In one aspect, an eye-mountable composition is disclosed, which may include a silicone hydrogel having silicon-containing monomer-derived units and hydrophilic monomer-derived units, a non-silicone hydrogel having non-silicon-containing hydrophobic monomer-derived units and hydrophilic monomer-derived units, or an elastomer. The composition is biocompatible, does not adhere to ocular tissue, and has a modulus of elasticity of 0.2 MPa to 10 MPa. Also provided is an eye mountable device including an electronics platform embedded in an eye-mountable composition, and a method for fabricating the eye-mountable device.

Biocompatible materials for underlid device fabrication

Methods and apparatus for positioning a structure on a polymer layer are described. A method may involve forming a first polymer layer. The method may further involve positioning, by an apparatus, a structure on the first polymer layer, where the apparatus comprises a rod having a first end that supports the structure as the structure is being positioned and a plunger located around the first end of the rod that presses the structure onto the first polymer layer as the structure is being positioned. And the method may involve forming a second polymer layer over the first polymer layer and the structure, where the first polymer layer defines a first side of a body-mountable device and the second polymer layer defines a second side of the body-mountable device opposite the first side.

Methods and apparatus for positioning a structure on a polymer layer

An eye-mountable device, having an anterior convex side and a posterior concave side, is packaged in a container having a base and a wall. The wall extends from the base and defines an opening of the container. Disposed within the container is a pedestal, which has a first end attached to the base of the container and a second end opposite the first end. The eye-mountable device is mounted on the pedestal such that the posterior concave side contacts the second end of the pedestal and the eye-mountable device is elevated from the base of the container. The opening of the container can be sealed by a lidstock.

A method may involve positioning a structure on a plurality of protrusions that extend from a surface of a molding piece, wherein the structure comprises a sensor or an electronic component; forming, using the molding piece, a body-mountable device by forming a polymer layer around the structure positioned on the plurality of protrusions, such that the structure is at least partially enclosed by the polymer layer, wherein the polymer layer defines a first side of the body-mountable device and a second side of the body-mountable device opposite the first side, and wherein the surface of the molding piece supports the polymer layer as the polymer layer is being formed; and removing the body-mountable device from the molding piece.

Methods and apparatus for forming a polymer layer around a structure using a plurality of protrusions

Molded electronic structures configured for use in body-mountable devices and methods for embedding molded electronic structures in a body-mountable device are described. An example method may include molding an electronic structure to have first curvature corresponding to a first radius of curvature. The electronic structure may include an antenna, a sensor, and an electronic device. The example method may also include adhering the molded electronic structure to a first polymer layer. The example method may additionally include forming a second polymer layer over the molded electronic structure adhered to the first polymer layer.

Molded electronic structures in body-mountable devices

A body-mountable device may include a first layer, a second layer, and an electronic structure. The first layer may include a first topographical feature, while the second layer may include a second topographical feature. The first topographical feature and the second topographical feature may be reciprocally-shaped. The second layer may be mounted on the first layer such that the first topographical feature interfaces with the second topographical feature, thereby mechanically securing the second layer to the first layer. The electronic structure, which may include an antenna, a sensor, and an electronic device, may be embedded in the second layer. In an example in which the body-mountable device is an eye-mountable device, the first layer may be a posterior lens, and the second layer may be an anterior lens.

Body-mountable devices with two layers

A body-mountable device may be formed of a polymeric material. A molding form can define a cavity and polymeric material can be formed using the mold to create a device shaped in accordance with the cavity. Electronics disposed on a substrate can be encapsulated within the polymeric material by forming a first layer of polymeric material, positioning the substrate on the first layer, and then forming a second layer of polymeric material over the substrate. A channel can expose a sensor disposed on the substrate. The channel may be formed while molding the second layer of polymeric material over the substrate. The molding form can include a protrusion that extends toward the sensor. A sacrificial sealant material can be applied to the sensor or the protrusion to create a seal between the protrusion and the sensor. The polymeric material forms around the sealed protrusion to create the channel.

Channel formation

A body-mountable device may include a first polymer layer, a second polymer layer, and a structure that includes a sensor between the first and second polymer layers. Fabricating the body-mountable device may involve providing a respective surface layer on each of one or more molding pieces, forming a first polymer layer, positioning the structure on the first polymer layer and then forming, between molding pieces, the second polymer layer over the structure positioned on the first polymer layer. The surface layer of each molding piece may facilitate release of the polymer layer or fabricated body-mountable device without disruption to the embedded structure.

Methods for mold release of body-mountable devices including microelectronics

An apparatus may include a mounting structure configured to removably mount a concave surface of a device. The mounting structure may have a convex mounting surface that corresponds to the concave surface of the device. The device may have a convex surface opposite the concave surface. The apparatus may also include a base structure that has a flat surface. The apparatus may also include a support structure coupled to the base structure and the mounting structure. The support structure may be configured to align the mounting structure at a given angle such that a target area on the convex surface of the device is substantially parallel to the flat surface of the base structure when the device is mounted on the mounting structure.

Devices and systems for lens support

A body-mountable device may include a first polymer layer, a second polymer layer, and a structure that includes a sensor between the first and second polymer layers. Forming the body-mountable device may involve positioning the structure on the first polymer layer and then forming, in a molding piece, the second polymer layer over the structure positioned on the first polymer layer. The molding piece includes a surface that supports the second polymer layer as the second polymer layer is being formed and a protrusion that extends from the surface to the sensor through the second polymer layer as the second polymer layer is being formed. The body-mountable device that is removed from the molding piece has a channel to the sensor formed by the protrusion.
