The present invention relates to a method of treating a crude acetone stream. The method generally includes treating a crude acetone stream which has acetone and at least one low-boiling impurity with a catalyst to form a treated acetone stream that has acetone and at least one higher-boiling impurity and then distilling the treated acetone stream to remove at least a portion of the higher-boiling impurity to produce a purified acetone stream. This is particularly helpful in processes where a more pure acetone is desired, including a process for making purified isopropanol.

Method of purifying crude acetone stream

An acrylic emulsion is disclosed. The emulsion comprises from about 30% to about 90% by weight of water, about 10% to about 70% by weight of an acrylic polymer, about 0.2% to about 10% by weight of a emulsifying agent, and up to 20% by weight of an organic solvent. The acrylic polymer contains from about 20% to about 80% by weight of recurring units of t-butyl acrylate or methacrylate. Latex coatings formulated from the acrylic emulsion show significantly improved resistance to moisture and corrosion.

Acrylic latex composition

A UV-curable composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a crosslinking agent, a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate, and an acrylic polyol. The crosslinking agent is selected from the group consisting of multifunctional isocyanates, melamines, and silanes. The acrylic polyol comprises recurring units of an allylic alcohol. The composition can be irradiated to be solidified and then fully cured by the urethane, melamine, or silane reactions. Alternatively, the composition can be cured by the urethane, melamine, or silane reactions, and then fully cured by radiation. The invention provides low VOC but high performance coatings. More importantly, the invention provides a UV-curable system without the need for acrylated oligomers.

UV-curable compositions

Allyl carbamates are disclosed. The allyl carbamates are prepared by reacting an isocyanate with an allylic alcohol or alkoxylated allylic alcohol. Suitable isocyanates are selected from hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), HDI biuret, dimer, HDI trimer, HDI allophanate, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), IPDI trimer, IPDI allophanate, bis(isocyanatocyclohexyl)methane, and mixtures thereof. The allyl carbamates have at least two allyl functional groups per molecule. UV-curable and air-drying coatings formulated from the allyl carbamates show excellent chemical resistance and physical properties.

Multifunctional allyl carbamates and coatings therefrom

A method of preparing UV-curable urethane compositions is disclosed. The method comprises two steps. First, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) reacts with a hydroxy-functional resin to form an NCO prepolymer. Second, the NCO prepolymer reacts with a hydroxy-functional ethylenic monomer to form the UV-curable urethane composition. The hydroxy-functional resin comprises at least about 2 wt % of recurring units of a propoxylated allylic alcohol. The method of the invention allows the preparation of UV-curable urethane compositions from acrylic polyols without gel.

Preparation of UV-curable urethane compositions

Coating and ink compositions based on organic solvents that have negligible photochemical reactivity and methods for making them are disclosed. The organic solvents have calculated oxidation rate constants of less than about 1&times;10 cm /g&middot;sec, and evaporation rates of not more than about 5 times that of n-butyl acetate. Coatings made by the method of the invention are used for wood, furniture, automotive, container, architectural, coil, aerosol, marine, transportation, industrial, ink, overprint varnish, and road-coating applications.

Coatings and inks based on solvents having negligible photochemical reactivity

A process for preparing vinyl aromatic-allylic alcohol copolymers, such as styrene-allyl alcohol (SAA) copolymers, is disclosed. The process is conducted in the presence of a solvent, which enables the preparation of copolymers having both low hydroxyl functionalities and low molecular weights. SAA copolymers produced by the process have an average hydroxyl functionality less than about 4.

Preparation of epoxy-functional resins

An ultra-high solids coating composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a polyol blend of a liquid acrylic polyol and a resinous polyol. The polyol blend is crosslinked with a multifunctional isocyanate, melamine, or silane to form a variety of coatings. The coating composition has a significantly higher solid % than that is formulated from a single resin that has similar composition of the combination of the polyol blend. The coatings include less than about 35% by weight of an organic solvent.

Ultra-high-solids acrylic coatings

Allylic copolymer resins and processes for making them are disclosed. The resins are made by copolymerizing an ethylenic monomer, a monofunctional allyl monomer, and a multifunctional allyl monomer under free-radical conditions. The multifunctional allyl monomer is used in an amount and manner effective to give a copolymer resin having a polydispersity (Mw/Mn) within the range of about 5 to about 30. The resins, which are easy to make with even bulk polymerization, are particularly valuable, for example, as toner resins, thermoset resins, reactive plasticizers, and rheology modifiers.

Process for making allylic copolymer resins

Graffiti removers particularly useful for removing permanent ink from painted surfaces are disclosed. The graffiti removers include a dye solvent (a pyrrolidone or a lactone), a dye non-solvent (a glycol ether ester or a glycol diether), and a dye bleaching agent (an oxidizing agent, reducing agent, or base). The dye bleaching agent is the key to eliminating the problem of 'ghosting' that is observed when conventional graffiti removers are used to remove permanent marker ink graffiti.

A method for removing cured sulfur-containing polymer sealants from surfaces is disclosed. The method comprises applying to the surface a sealant remover comprising at least about 50 wt. % of a pyrrolidone, especially N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and allowing the cured sulfur-containing polymer and the remover to remain in contact until the cured sulfur-containing polymer is loosened and can be easily removed from the surface. The method of the invention enables fast, effective removal of the sulfur-containing polymer sealants commonly used in the aerospace, construction, and insulating-glass industries.

Pyrrolidones for cleanup of sulfur-containing polymers

Hydroxy-functionalized polyoxybutylene ether compositions having improved thermal and oxidative stability are prepared by the polymerization of a mixture of C.sub.4 epoxides in the presence of an organic initiator containing hydroxy groups.
