A container lid includes a conventional main or pour opening and a vent opening spaced from the main opening. A vent score defines the shape of the vent opening, and a vent panel covers the vent opening. The vent panel has a raised convex shape. The lower surface of the tab handle includes a protruding portion, seen as a concave shaped element when viewed from above the container lid. The protruding portion of the tab handle can be aligned with the vent panel so application of a downward force on the tab handle transfers force to the vent panel and breaks the vent score. The shapes of the vent panel and concave element of the tab handle can be adjusted for selective and controlled force transfer to create the vent opening.

A thermal barrier liner is preferably spray coated onto the internal surface of a container. The liner is provided in embodiments including a closed cell substrate, a base layer having gas or liquid filled microcapsules, a base layer having microencapsulated solid-liquid phase change material, or combinations thereof. For the closed cell substrate embodiment, when the liner is under pressure within the container prior to the container being opened, the liner maintains a minimum thickness. When the container is opened and as pressure is released within the container, the liner expands to achieve equilibrium. The liner can be supplemented with a foaming agent to create cellular structures. Voids created by the microcapsules enhance the thermal barrier characteristics of the liner. The phase change material changes phase from a solid to a liquid state upon absorbing heat.

Thermal barrier liner for containers

A reclosable packaged food container, comprising an outer carton and an inner flexible liner. The outer carton has a generally semi-rigid construction, the inner liner is positioned inside the outer carton, and a supply of a food product is disposed in that liner. The outer carton includes a top wall that, in turn, includes first and second opposing top flaps. These flaps are movable between closed and open positions; and in the open position, the top flaps form a top opening, longitudinally extending only partly across the length of the top wall, to provide access to the inner liner. The inner liner includes a top edge and a top portion. That top edge is adapted to form a reclosable pour opening at the top of the top portion of the liner. In addition, the top portion of the liner is adapted to form a collapsible pouring spout extending only partly across the top edge of the liner and also extending through the top opening in the carton to dispense the food product from the liner. When the flaps of the carton are in the open position, the flaps extend upwardly from the top opening of the carton and form a spout guide to engage the top portion of the liner, on opposite sides thereof, to help form and to hold that top portion of the liner in the shape of the pouring spout.
