Solar power tracking techniques are described herein. In one aspect of the invention, a solar power tracking apparatus includes, but is not limited to, a voltage converter and a controller coupled to the voltage converter. The voltage converter includes an input capable of being coupled to a solar power source and an output capable of being coupled to an electronic load, such as, for example, a portable electronic device. The voltage converter is configured to monitor or detect an amount of power drawn by the electronic load at the output of the voltage converter. In response to the monitored power drawn, the controller is configured to control the voltage converter to reduce amount of power to be drawn subsequently if the monitored amount of power exceeds a predetermined threshold. As a result, the output voltage from the solar power source is maintained within a predetermined range. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Methods and apparatuses for operating devices with solar power

Devices and methods for dynamically selecting a matching network for an antenna are provided. In one example, an electronic device capable of selecting such a matching network may include an antenna, several selectable matching networks, a radio receiver, and matching network control circuitry. The radio receiver may couple to the antenna via one of the selectable matching networks to receive a radio signal with both an analog and digital component. The matching network control circuitry may select the matching network from among the several selectable matching networks based at least in part on a characteristic of the digital component of the radio signal.

Use of RDS data to select matching network

Systems, methods, and machine-readable media are disclosed for controlling an electronic device using data transmitted over radio signals. In some embodiments, a radio source may embed instructions to control an electronic device into a radio signal. For example, the radio source may use the RDS communications protocol to transmit the instructions in an FM radio signal. The electronic device may receive the radio signal and may perform the instructions included in the radio signal. For example, in a testing environment, the instructions can include commands to test the electronic device's radio using test parameters specified in the instructions. Responsive to receiving the test parameters, the electronic device may configure itself (e.g., turn on or off certain components) and record audio from a specified radio station.

Portable devices having multiple power interfaces are described herein. According to one embodiment of the invention, a portable electronic device includes, but is not limited to, a processor, a memory coupled to the processor for storing instructions, when executed from the memory, cause the processor to perform one or more functions, a battery coupled to provide power to the processor and the memory, and a battery charging manager coupled to charge the battery using power derived from a plurality of power sources including a solar power source. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Portable devices having multiple power interfaces

Systems and methods are disclosed for a self-testing power management unit (PMU) in an electronic device. Self-testing may enable the testing of PMU power supply outputs while reducing the need for test points to conserve circuit board real estate. In one embodiment, a PMU is placed in self-test mode, and a test controller may perform capacitance tests on each power supply output. Once the capacitance test has been performed on each power supply output, the PMU may be placed in normal operating mode, and voltage tests may be performed on each power rail. Once voltage tests have been performed on all power rails in the PMU, the self-test may be complete. In some embodiments, the test controller may communicate with a test multiplexer to select the power supply output for testing. Further, the measurements resulting from the capacitance and voltage tests may be converted to a digital signal through an analog-to-digital converter on the PMU.

Self-test power management unit

This is directed to methods, systems, and apparatuses for implementing circuitry that can be used to control multiple solar cells to generate power for a portable electronic device. For example, in response to determining that one or more of the solar cells is generating a reduce voltage output (e.g., due to a partial obstruction of one or more of the solar cells), the connections among the solar cells can be configured to generate a constant preset voltage, as long as a subset of the solar cells is operating. The voltage generated by the solar cells can then be boosted to a value suitable for powering the portable electronic device and/or any of its individual components. As another example, the connections among the solar cells can be configured to generate a startup voltage to directly power the portable electronic device and/or any of its components.
