An apparatus for forming a vacuum in a sealed enclosure through an electrochemical reaction includes an electrochemical cell comprising a cathode and an anode supported on a solid electrolyte. The solid electrolyte is a Li-ion non-volatile electrolyte containing a dissolved metal salt. The cathode is constructed of a material with which lithium is known to form alloys. The anode is constructed of a lithium-ion containing material. The cell is operable to expose lithium metal on the cathode.

Electrochemical method and apparatus for forming a vacuum in a sealed enclosure

Systems and processes for removing and purifying bromide from an aqueous bromide solution are described. Electrochemistry is used to either convert bromide to bromine to allow its extraction in an organic phase, or to cause deposition of bromine onto an electrode. In either case, once removed from the aqueous bromide solution, the bromide can be recovered and purified.

Bromide removal from aqueous solutions

Systems and methods for detecting and/or removing selenate from an aqueous selenate-containing solution are described. The method includes adding sufficient acid to the aqueous selenate-containing solution to acidify the aqueous selenate-containing solution; contacting the acidic aqueous selenate-containing solution with an underpotantial deposited copper-coated electrode; and removing selenate from the aqueous selenate-containing solution by forming copper-selenide on the underpotential copper-coated electrode.

Detection and removal of selenate from aqueous solution

A process to extract metal ions and potentially other hazardous species present in solution to levels low enough to make it suitable for use and/or to quantify the levels of these contaminants in the solution. The process involves the use of functionalized magnetic particles to bind with metal ions. The process occurs in a three-chambered cell and utilizes a magnet to agglomerate the magnetic particles bound with metal ions to an electrode, and by altering the pH of the solution within the cell using gases produced by a solid state electrolyzer or from the air, encourages the plating of the metal ions on the electrode and the pushing out of the metal-free solution out of the cell.

System and method for removal of metals from solution

A portable, self-contained device is described for the topical application of oxygen and the removal of wound exudates to promote the healing of skin wounds. The device includes a wound dressing that incorporates at least one electrochemical cell for generating oxygen. The device can regulate the supply of oxygen to the wound at various concentrations, pressures and dosages and is used to produce a high concentration of oxygen at the wound site. By reversing the polarity of the power source a reduced pressure can be created in a reservoir attached to our device. The reduced pressure in the reservoir draws naturally flowing exudates away from the wound. Alternately, two reverse polarity cells are used to alternately supply oxygen and draw away exudates.

Portable electrochemical devices for dual action wound healing

An electrode ( ) containing platinum has its surface modified with sulfur, tellurium, or selenium, or compounds thereof, which renders the surface highly selective for the conversion of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide. The high selectivity of the electrode, and its ability to function in acidic electrolytes make it suitable to a variety of electrochemical processes. In a preferred embodiment, an oxygen concentration device (A) incorporating the electrode as a cathode ( ) also includes an anode ( ) and a selective membrane ( ), formed from a solid polymer electrolyte material, between the anode and the cathode. An oxygen-containing atmosphere is brought into contact with the cathode where it is converted to hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide passes through the membrane to the anode where it is reconverted to purified oxygen.

Modified platinum substrates for oxygen reduction

A portable, self-contained device is described for the topical application of oxygen to promote the healing of skin wounds. The device is comprised of a wound dressing that incorporates an electrochemical, chemical, or thermal means of generating high purity oxygen. The device can regulate the supply of oxygen to an area above the wound at various concentrations, pressures and dosages. The device is driven by a built in or accessory power source. Ambient air is brought into contact with a gas permeable cathode. Oxygen present in the air is reduced at the cathode to negative ions (i.e. peroxide, superoxide or hydroxyl ions) and/or their unprotonated and protonated neutral species. One or more of these species diffuse through an electrolyte and are then oxidized at a gas permeable anode to produce a high concentration of oxygen directly above the wound. Oxygen can also be depleted from that same area by reversing the polarity of the power source allowing the supply of oxygen to the wound to be modulated, thereby controlling the rate of healing.

An electrochemical device for concentrating oxygen is provided. The electrochemical device comprises a cathode for reducing oxygen to peroxide. An anode is provided for oxidizing the peroxide to form oxygen according to a two electron process. A solid polymer electrolyte diffuses the peroxide from the cathode to the anode.

Electrochemical device for removal and regeneration of oxygen and method

A method for removing NOX from gases is provided. A gas comprising NOX and/or SO.sub.2 is flowed behind a gas permeable anode. Air is simultaneously flowed behind the gas permeable cathode, and the cathode is separated from the anode by a liquid electrolyte. An external potential is applied between the anode and the cathode to bring about the oxidation of NOX and/or SO.sub.2 at the anode and the reduction of dioxygen at the cathode to yield nitric oxide and/or sulfuric acid, and hydrogen peroxide.
