A pneumatic control system for a range type compound transmission is provided including a first actuator valve that selectively connects a first range cylinder chamber to a pneumatic source when a high range shift is requested by the vehicle operator, and a second valve that selectively connects a second range cylinder chamber to a pneumatic source when the main transmission is in gear, but exhausts the second chamber when the main transmission section is in neutral.

Slave valve with integral syncho-saver logic

A lubrication system for transmissions is provided wherein a lubrication flow path is provided from an oil pump located within a transmission casing to front countershaft bearings. A second flow path provides oil directly to a predetermined number of gear sets located along a main shaft. In one embodiment, oil flows through a first tube from the oil pump to an annular ring located in a groove between a front wall of the transmission main case and a rear face of a clutch housing. The ring is provided with a plurality of apertures along its outer circumference spaced to allow oil to flow directly to front bearings of any counter shaft placed adjacent the main shaft. A closed ended tube connects to the annular ring and extends perpendicularly from the annular ring through the front wall of the transmission main case. The closed ended tube extends substantially parallel to the driven main shaft, and includes spaced apertures that deliver oil directly to a predetermined number of gear sets located axially along the main shaft.

Pressure lubrication system for countershaft transmission

A control system for auxiliary section range and/or splitter control includes a direct ported control valve assembly having a spool disposed within a bore of a cover housing, the spool having a differential area to bias the valve and two sealing members radially biased by a spring to direct pressurized air or hydraulic fluid to an appropriate side of a piston to effect the splitter and/or range shift of the transmission. The control valve assembly includes components, such as the valve spool, which may be used in various transmission applications in addition to components, such as the pilot cap and seal plate, which may be selected to control the logic (normally open or normally closed) of the valve assembly and the apply rate of the range and/or splitter cylinder depending upon the particular application. A filter/regulator is mounted to the valve cover assembly to provide direct porting of the pressurized fluid supply to eliminate connecting hoses.

System for control of auxiliary section of compound transmissions

An auxiliary transmission section (14) shift control system (230)/method is provided which include a residual pressure valve (246) and a one-way restricted flow pressure relief valve (250) to prevent an auxiliary section high speed ratio synchronized clutch (92) damage if the main transmission section (12) is engaged during an auxiliary section upshift. The chamber (224A) of the actuator (220) associated with the high speed synchronizer clutch is constantly gradually vented to a reference pressure through a severely restricted orifice in the one way restricted flow pressure relief valve (250) and the residual pressure valve (246) will block fluid flow from the source (234) to the slave valve (238) whenever the main transmission section is shifted to the not neutral condition thereof. Accordingly, whenever an auxiliary section upshift is attempted while the main transmission section is in the not neutral condition thereof, the actuator (222) will assert a force gradually reduced from a first high force to a second lower force on the high speed range clutch to prevent or minimize damage thereto.

Variable pressure range section actuator piston

A two-stage auxiliary section shift actuator (220) is provided which will apply a first relatively smaller force upon preselection of an auxiliary section shift for rapid initiation thereof upon release of an interlock (256). Upon initiation of the auxiliary section shift, the actuator will apply a second larger force to assure rapid engagement of a selected auxiliary section synchronized clutch.

Two-stage range piston-cylinder assembly

An adaptor (25) is disclosed for use in mounting a transmission clutch housing (21) to a flywheel housing (11') wherein the flywheel housing defines a first bolt circle pattern (R1), and the clutch housing defines a second, substantially smaller bolt circle pattern (R2). The adaptor includes a first portion (27) and a second portion (29), the portions defining pluralities of bolt holes (37 and 43). The first portion defines a forward surface (33) and the second portion defines a rearward surface (41), both surfaces coinciding with an imaginary transverse mounting plane MP. The forward surface of the first portion engages a mounting surface (62) of the flywheel housing, while the rearward surface of the second portion engages a forward surface (54) of the clutch housing, such that the use of the adaptor (25) does not change the relative axial position of the flywheel housing and clutch housing, which would require a change in the configuration or length of the transmission input shaft (19).

A fluid pressure actuated auxiliary transmission section (14) shift control system (3230/270)/method is provided which includes a control member (246) to prevent auxiliary section synchronized clutch (92, 128) damage if the main transmission section (12) is engaged during an auxiliary section shift. A range synchronizer protection valve (246) is effective to exhaust at least the high speed ratio chamber (224) of the piston actuator (220) whenever a main section engaged condition is sensed.

Range section actuator control system and method for preventing damage

A fluid pressure actuated auxiliary transmission section (14) shift control system (230)/method is provided which includes control members to minimize the possibility of auxiliary section synchronized clutch (92, 128) damage by the main transmission section (12) being engaged during an auxiliary section shift. A range interlock assembly (258) is provided which will release the range slave valve (238) as the main transmission section is shifted into the neutral position thereof and preexhaust valves (300, 302) are provided which will exhaust the appropriate actuator chamber (222A, 224A) upon preselection of an auxiliary section shift.
