Fibrous glass blowing insulation is made by slitting and crosscutting a blanket of fibrous glass wool into small columns and conveying the columns to a bagging machine, the columns normally breaking up at random during conveying and packaging into approximate cubes and smaller flakes or prisms of various thicknesses.

Fibrous glass blowing insulation and process

A method and apparatus for packaging compressible fibrous batts and a package of same are provided. The batts are formed by severing a longitudinally-extending strip of compressible fibrous material into batts of discrete lengths with the batts then being collected in end-to-end relationship. The batts are then moved into a loop of a packaging machine, which loop is formed by a belt maintained under controlled tension. The batts are fed longitudinally in abutting, end-to-end relationship into the belt loop which places them under compression as they are wound into a package, with the loop gradually expanding in diameter as the package size increases. Tapes are placed directly around the outermost batt to hold the package in the compressed state and the completed package is then discharged from the machine.

Apparatus for packing compressible fibrous batts

Apparatus is provided for packaging compressible material in strip form, such as building insulation. The compressible strip is wound into a roll and held under compression during rolling to provide a compact package. The compressed package can then be held by two tapes, without additional overwrap, which tapes are automatically fed onto an end portion of the compressible strip as it is being rolled up, with the package then being automatically ejected. The apparatus includes an endless belt carried on a frame and positioned and driven in a manner to form a loop in itself which is in the path of the compressible strip being lineally moved toward the belt. The belt is driven to roll the strip as it is moved into the loop and means are provided for maintaining the belt under tension to place the strip in compression. The tension means for the belt also can increase pressure on the strip during rolling, and as the loop and roll enlarge, although the tension means can be arranged to reduce the pressure, if desired. The tape is fed from underneath to a trailing end portion of the strip and is wrapped around the roll after entering the loop. When the roll is completed, part of the frame for the belt is moved away from a stationary part to open the loop and automatically eject the compressed, packaged roll. The apparatus includes a multi-zone, suction conveyor to aid in feeding the compressible strip into the loop. The apparatus also includes facilities for relatively easily removing and replacing the endless belt, when needed.

Roll-up compressive packaging apparatus

A coated, decorative panel or tile of molded fibrous material is provided. A pad or pelt of mineral fibers, preferably glass fibers held together by a binder in an uncured state, is compressed and heated in a matched metal contoured mold to the desired permanent shape, after which a finish coating is supplied. The fibers of the panel are heterogeneously arranged with most fibers being parallel to the contoured surface of the product but with some lying angularly with respect thereto. Also, some portions of the uncured fiber pad may be compressed in the mold to a greater extent than others. In addition, the concentration of binder may also vary widely over the product. These factors result in a variation in the apparent density, and when the panel is subsequently coated, the degree of absorption of the coating material differs widely, resulting in an undesirable nonuniform appearance. To overcome these problems, a fibrous sheet is disposed on the surface of the uncured pad which is to be molded to the desired contour. When the product is molded, the sheet conforms to the three-dimensional contoured surface of the mold along with the fibrous pad, with the sheet bridging the more open portions of the product surface and masking non-uniform areas thereof. A substantially more uniform appearance is thereby achieved even when the product is coated with less coating material after molding.

Coated molded panel member

Building materials of the type containing an impermeable membrane, as for example, an insulation material, or a wall board, or ceiling tile are provided. The impermeable membrane is first formed upon a sheet of paper which gives structural rigidity to the membrane, and is then used as an adhesive to hold the paper onto a porous body by heating the membrane to a softened condition and pressing it against the porous body. The membrane is preferably made in two steps wherein a first application of a thermoplastic latex is put on the paper and then a second application of latex is applied to seal pores in the film produced by the first application of latex. A fire retardant i.e. either a flame retardant salt in the paper or a halogen liberating resin coating on the outside surface is provided to liberate flame extinguishing gases to be held in place by the vapor barrier. In the most preferred embodiments, a halogen containing thermoplastic resin is used as at least part of the material forming the vapor barrier and either another coating of a halogen containing resin is applied to the outside surface of the paper, or a flame retarding salt is included in the paper to produce a building material whose surface has an exceedingly low flame propagation rate.
