Downhole tool and method of forming the same

A variable resistor assembly is preferably adapted for use with a fuel level sensor and includes an arcuate resistive area including a plurality of radially oriented and spaced apart conductive contact segments, and further includes a wiper including an arm and at least two contactors carried by the arm, wherein the at least two contactors are arranged on the arm such that the at least two contactors make contact with one of the conductive contact segments before breaking contact with an adjacent one of the conductive contact segments. Preferably, the at least two contactors are laterally offset with respect to one another and/or oriented at an angle with respect to the conductive contact segments.

Fuel level sensor variable resistor assembly

A glass-sealed electrical fitting for an automotive fuel tank is mounted on a flange which supports an internal fuel pump and fuel level sensor within the fuel tank. In one form, the glass seal surrounds a plurality of pins longitudinally disposed within an elongated housing which penetrates a fuel tank wall. An outer surface of the housing engages rigidly to the flange, and an inner surface of the housing engages to the glass seal. In another form each pin is sealed to a housing by a separate glass seal.

Electrostatic charge control for in-tank fuel module components

This invention provides a low profile fuel tank assembly having an elongated fuel delivery module mounted horizontally within the fuel tank and independent from a flange which covers a sole fuel tank access hole. An integrated fuel pump and associated motor of the module dictates the length of the module. The motor and pump has a rotational axis preferably disposed substantially horizontal within the fuel tank. Because the fuel delivery module is supported by the fuel tank shell or bottom, independent of the flange, the access hole can be located anywhere on the fuel tank in order to simplify fuel tank ingress and minimize repair procedures. During assembly, the module is inserted into the fuel tank through the access hole, and is then placed and snap-locked preferably into a bracket structure permanently engaged to an inside surface of the fuel tank.

Fuel tank assembly

A fuel delivery system including a fuel tank having multiple sections. A fuel pump is disposed in a first section with an inlet for drawing liquid fuel from the first section and an outlet for supplying the fuel to an engine and to a pick-up disposed in the second section. A siphon line is connected to the pick-up at one end and terminates in the first section at another end. A fuel inlet of the pickup communicates with the siphon line through a valve member that is actuated to open and closed positions. In operation, the fuel pump provides a flow of liquid fuel to the pick-up to purge and prime the siphon line which normally maintains a substantially equal liquid fuel level in the first and second sections of the fuel tank. In some conditions, the valve closes to prevent reverse flow of fuel from the first section to the second section of the tank.

Saddle tank siphon primer

A fuel level sensor that includes a housing having a cavity formed therein, and a resistor element disposed within the cavity for creating a signal that may be utilized to indicate a liquid fuel level within a fuel tank. A float lever is associated with the housing adjacent a first end and adjacent a second end with a float is responsive to the level liquid fuel in the fuel tank. The float lever includes a first magnet that is disposed adjacent to the housing. A wiper and contact assembly is positioned generally adjacent to the resistor element to generate a signal that may be used to indicate a liquid fuel level. The wiper and contact assembly includes a second magnet that is magnetically coupled with the first magnet so that movement of the float lever is translated to movement of the wiper and contact assembly.

Sealed fuel level sensor

A strainer constructed for attachment to an inlet of a fuel pump has at least one layer of permeable material forming a cavity. A body is disposed at least in part in the cavity and has at least one tubular portion arranged for fluid communication with the inlet of the fuel pump to provide a substantially unrestricted flow path leading from the filter to the inlet of the fuel pump, while inhibiting vapor from entering the fuel pump.

An optical fuel level sensor for providing an electronic signal representative of the fuel level within a fuel tank, generally comprising a waveguide body, a photo source, and a photo receiver. The waveguide body can either be of a dual-tapered or single-taper shape and includes numerous tiered facets, which are angled surfaces located on the outer periphery of the waveguide. When the fuel level within the fuel tank is above a particular tiered facet, light that impinges that facet will refract out of the waveguide, conversely, when the fuel level is below that facet, impinging light will be reflected back into the waveguide such that it is received by the photo receiver. In this manner, the fuel level sensor is able to utilize the reflected light received by the photo receiver to provide an electronic signal representative of the fuel level. Furthermore, a calibration feature may be included which provides calibration information indicating when the fuel level has reached a known, predetermined level.

Optical fuel level sensor

An in-tank fuel pump and reservoir canister module having a fuel filter mounted in the module base adjacent the bottom of the tank and defining a filter chamber having an outlet connected to the inlet of an electric fuel pump received directly in the tank exteriorly alongside of an upright overflow-type reserve fuel canister. A canister bottom outlet is closed by a flow controlling valve and/or by an always-open restricted orifice communicating with the filter chamber for returning engine bypassed reserve fuel from the canister reservoir to the pump inlet, either continuously and/or only when a low level supply of fuel in the tank to the filter is interrupted. The valve is operated by a diaphragm portion of the filter, base-mounted between the canister outlet and filter chamber and also communicating directly with the tank, the valve opening against the bias of a coil spring in response to pump suction acting on a capillary seal formed on the diaphragm filter to thereby allow reserve fuel to flow into the filter chamber. At system shut-down a filter backwash flow can occur from the canister reservoir. The pump rotary vane impeller chamber has an internal vapor purging passageway communicating at its outlet directly with the interior of the tank so as not to be subjected to any anti-purging gravity pressure head differential existing between the fuel level in the canister reservoir versus that of the main body of fuel in the tank.
