The attachment and proliferation of antibiotic resistant, biofilm-forming bacteria to oft-handled material surfaces has emerged as a growing concern, particularly in the biomedical, healthcare and food packaging industries. UV-curable phosphoniums bearing benzophenone anchors have been synthesized with a variety of alkyl, aryl, and fluoroalkyl functional groups at phosphorus to probe their efficacy as thermally stable antimicrobial additives in plastics or as surface coatings. In an embodiment, a phosphonium compound having the following formula has been synthesized: in which R is a phosphine group substituted with alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl, substituted aryl, heteroalkyl or any combination thereof. These materials maintained the ability to kill biofilm-forming bacteria even after being subject to abrasion processes, demonstrating the potential to serve as long-term antimicrobial materials.

Phosphonate functional antimicrobial coatings for metal surfaces

A cured coating or molded article prepared from a composition comprising an actinic-radiation curing polymer, wherein the composition is cured with actinic radiation at a temperature of at most 150&#xb0; C. to form the cured coating or molded article; wherein the cured coating or molded article has a thickness of at least about 0.5 mm and a hardness of about Shore A 90 to about Shore D 90.

Actinic radiation curable coating compositions

An ink jet ink composition comprised an anti-curl agent and ink jet printing processing using such ink jet ink composition. The ink jet ink composition includes a hyperbranched polymer. The hyperbranched polymer acts as an anti-curl agent to control curl during a printing process. The anti-curl agent, i.e., the hyperbranched polymer, may be present in the ink amounts less than conventional anti-curl agents and still effectively control curl without detrimentally effecting intercolor bleed control water fastness or drying. Additionally, the ink composition do not exhibit increases in viscosity, and problems associated therewith, that occur in ink composition using conventional anti-curl agents.

Ink jet composition

A multicolored display and process for forming such a display is provided. The multicolored display includes marking particles comprising a mixture of photochromic materials. The photochromic materials each exhibit a first 'invisible' photochromic state at a first absorption spectrum and at least a second 'visible' photochromic state at a second absorption spectrum. The second &#x201c;visible&#x201d; photochromic state of each photochromic material produces a different color relative to the other photochromic materials. In embodiments, the marking particles include a mixture of a spiropyran material and a dithienylethene material.

Multicolored photochromic display

Various techniques are disclosed for forming bichromal balls or multicolored balls by laser-based methods. In one method, a laser and a template are used to form small discrete precursors that are subsequently spherodized. In another method a laser is used to cut or otherwise form small discrete precursors that are also subsequently spherodized. These methods are particularly well suited for forming balls or other sphere-like bodies having diameters less than 100 microns.

Bichromal and multicolored balls

Disclosed is a phase change ink composition comprising a colorant and an ink vehicle, the ink being a solid at temperatures less than about 50&#xb0; C. and exhibiting a viscosity of no more than about 20 centipoise at a jetting temperature of no more than about 160&#xb0; C., wherein at a first temperature hydrogen bonds of sufficient strength exist between the ink vehicle molecules so that the ink vehicle forms hydrogen-bonded dimers, oligomers, or polymers, and wherein at a second temperature which is higher than the first temperature the hydrogen bonds between the ink vehicle molecules are sufficiently broken that fewer hydrogen-bonded dimers, oligomers, or polymers are present in the ink at the second temperature than are present in the ink at the first temperature, so that the viscosity of the ink at the second temperature is lower than the viscosity of the ink at the first temperature.

Disclosed is a process which comprises (a) reacting allyl bromide with diethyl amine in a molar ratio of at least about 1 mole of allyl bromide per about 1.15 moles of diethyl amine and in a molar ratio of no more than about 1 mole of allyl bromide per about 2 moles of diethyl amine, thereby generating allyl diethyl amine in a monomer reaction mixture; (b) subsequently filtering the monomer reaction mixture to remove impurities; (c) subsequently reacting the allyl diethyl amine with allyl bromide, thereby generating solid diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide; (d) subsequently isolating the solid diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide; (e) subsequently dissolving the diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide in a solvent and adding thereto a polymerization initiator to form a polymerization reaction mixture; (f) subsequently heating the polymerization reaction mixture in a vessel equipped with a reflux condenser to a temperature of from about 90 to about 100&deg; C., thereby generating poly(diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide); and (g) subsequently optionally isolating the poly(diallyl diethyl ammonium bromide) from the polymerization reaction mixture.
