Embodiments of a surface heat exchanger for a vehicle are described. In one embodiment, a surface heat exchanger includes a plurality of fins on a first outer surface The surface heat exchanger is mounted within an interior of a duct of a vehicle. An inlet of the duct is located on a side of the vehicle forward of a rear axle of the vehicle and an outlet of the duct is located rearward of the inlet. The plurality of fins of the surface heat exchanger are exposed to the interior of the duct. The plurality of fins are configured to transfer heat to airflows interacting with the plurality of fins as the airflows pass through the duct.

Duct surface heat exchanger for vehicles

Embodiments of an upper body heat exchanger for a vehicle. In one embodiment, an upper body heat exchanger includes a first portion having a plurality of fins disposed on a first surface. The upper body heat exchanger also includes a second portion having a plurality of heat transfer fluid passages disposed on a second surface of the upper body heat exchanger. The second portion is beneath the first portion. The upper body heat exchanger is mounted on the vehicle such that the first surface of the first portion of the upper body heat exchanger is exposed. The plurality of heat transfer fluid passages are configured to transfer heat from heated fluid flowing through the plurality of heat transfer fluid passages to airflows interacting with the plurality of fins as the vehicle is moving.

Upper body heat exchanger for vehicles

A vehicle heat transfer system includes a flow through heat exchanger, a surface heat exchanger, at least a first vehicle component, and a controller that is operable to selectively transfer heat to or from the first vehicle component with either or both of the flow through heat exchanger and the surface heat exchanger based on one or more operating conditions. In a further aspect, a vehicle heat transfer system includes, a vehicle component positioned on a vehicle that is heated or cooled by a fluid, and a surface heat exchanger positioned on the vehicle, the surface heat exchanger having an inlet that receives the fluid used to heat or cool the vehicle component, an outlet that returns the fluid to heat or cool the vehicle component, and a closed fluid path extending between the inlet and the outlet.

Heat transfer system for a vehicle

A thermal management system having a first mode of operation configured to transfer heat from a first plurality of components of a vehicle in the first fluid flow path and to selectively transfer heat to at least one of a second plurality of components in a second fluid flow path; a second mode of operation configured to transfer heat from the first plurality of components in the first fluid flow path and selectively transfer heat from the second plurality of components in an alternative second fluid flow path; and a third mode of operation configured to transfer heat from both the first plurality and the second plurality of components of the vehicle in a third fluid flow path. A controller is operable to selectively change the mode of operation between the first mode of operation, the second mode of operation and the third mode of operation based on operating conditions of the vehicle.
