A low profile electrical connector assembly includes plug and receptacle connectors having mating dielectric housings each mounting a plurality of terminals which include contact portions for interengagement with the contact portions of the terminals of the other connector. The terminals include feet portions for surface connection to circuit traces on a pair of printed circuit boards. The terminals are generally U-shaped as defined by a first leg that is joined to the respective foot portion of the terminal and free spring contact leg that is engageable with the contact portion of one of the terminals of the other connector and preloaded on a shoulder of the respective housing. The first leg is fixed to the housing at a proximal end thereof with a distal end of the first leg being flexibly movable into a slot in the housing. A retention member is mounted at each end of each connector housing and is generally L-shaped with a first leg attached to the respective end of one of the housings and second leg adapted for surface securement to the one side of the printed circuit board. Complementary interengaging holding members are provided near the opposite ends of the connector housings for holding the connectors in mated condition.

Low profile surface mountable electrical connector assembly

An electrical connector assembly is provided for mounting on a surface of a printed circuit board. The assembly includes a generally rectangular dielectric housing. A front of the housing defines a mating end for receiving a projecting portion of a mating connector. A generally rectangular conductive shield is disposed about portions of the housing and combines therewith to define a peripheral envelope of the connector assembly. The shield includes outside walls for covering at least some of the outside surfaces of the housing. At least one surface mounting foot is integral with at least one of the outside walls of the shield for securing the connector assembly to the surface of the printed circuit board. The surface mounting foot is located within the peripheral envelope of the connector assembly. The foot is formed at an opening in the shield which provides access through which visual observation can be made of the integrity of the surface mounting interface between the foot and the printed circuit board. The shield is disclosed as a two-piece shield, and improved dimpled overlapping interfaces are provided at open seams between the two pieces of the shield, and improved grounding feet are provided for commoning the two pieces of the shield.

Shielded electrical connector assemblies

A method of fabricating a pin tip is provided by a cutting and coining operation which first forms a pin tip which has a generally rounded configuration defining 4 slightly curved convex sides joined at 4 edges converging at a pin end. Thereafter the pin tip is coined again thereby overlapping portions of the conductive plating layer over the sharp edges of the pin tip.

Method of fabricating an electrical terminal pin

An electrical terminal pin is provided with a pin tip for insertion into a mating electrical female terminal, a hole in a printed circuit board or the like. The pin has an electrically conductive core plated with an electrically conductive layer. The pin tip is formed of a generally rounded pyramidal configuration defining four slightly curved convex sides joined at four edges converging at a pin end. Two opposite sides of the pin tip are non-plated. The other two opposite sides of the pin tip are plated with the conductive layer. Portions of the conductive plating layer overlap the edges of the pin tip in a smooth or rounded configuration to eliminate any sharpness thereof and to provide additional plated areas over the exposed core material. The pin tip is formed by a cutting and coining operation to form the configuration of the tip and to coin the overlapping portions of the conductive plating layer over the sharp edges of the pin tip.

Electrical terminal pin

An electrical connector includes a housing having at least one through hole. A terminal pin is inserted into the through hole and includes an enlarged retention portion and an enlarged stabilizing portion spaced longitudinally of the pin from the enlarged retention portion. Both the retention portion and the stabilizing portion are located in the through hole and at least the enlarged retention portion is sized to establish an interference fit with the housing within the hole. The enlarged retention portion is located adjacent a mid-point of the through hole, and the enlarged stabilizing portion is located adjacent one end of the through hole.

Electrical connector employing terminal pins

Connectors for field terminating ribbons cables are provided. The connector includes a nonconductive housing having a bottom wall and upstanding side walls extending therefrom to define an open topped termination cavity. A plurality of insulation displacement terminals are frictionally retained in the housing to extend through the bottom wall and into the termination cavity. A flowable sealing grease may be disposed in the termination cavity substantially surrounding the terminals therein. One wall of the housing includes a slot for receiving the ribbon cable in register with the terminals of the connector. A press member is frictionally retained in the housing in a pre-load condition and can be urged into a fully seated locked condition where the press member urges the ribbon cable toward the bottom wall of the housing and into engagement with the terminals therein. The movement of the press member into the housing causes the sealing grease to fill voids surrounding the terminals and the ribbon cable for efficient environmental sealing.

Multi conductor electrical cable connector

A miniature DIN connector is provided for mounting to a circuit board. The miniature DIN connector comprises a molded nonconductive housing having a plurality of apertures therein for receiving electrically conductive terminals. The housing includes an array of channels for positively positioning the board contact portions extending from the terminals and preventing lateral movement thereof. An internal shield is mountable in the housing to substantially surround pin-receiving portions of the terminals. The housing is lockingly engageable with a base, which in turn is mountable to the circuit board. The base includes apertures through which the board contact portions of the terminals may be directed. An external shield is disposed around four sides of the miniature DIN connector. The external and internal shields may include extensions into recesses in the front of the housing that provide ground contact to a conductive chassis panel abutting the front of the miniature DIN connector. The internal and external shields are not connected to one another, however the external shield may include a contact for directly contacting the shield of a DIN connector plug.

Miniature circular DIN connector

This invention relates to an electrical conductor cable connector which includes a housing made from an electrical insulating material, having side walls which define an enclosure, a lower portion which extends between the side walls to define an open topped compartment in the housing on one side of the lower portion, a plurality of suitably spaced conductor engaging elements in and extending from the lower portion into the compartment with each element including a portion in the floor of the housing for electrically connecting an electrical conductor in a cable located in the lower portion to the conductor engaging element, a press member which is made from an electrical insulating material, for pressing a conductor ribbon tape cable into the compartment and the conductors which are carried by the tape into electrical engagement with the conductor engaging elements, means for clamping the ribbon tape in the compartment between the conductor engaging elements and each tape exit from the housing and a catch arrangement for locking the press member in the compartment to hold the tape clamped in the housing.

A miniature DIN connector is provided for mounting to a circuit board. The miniature DIN connector comprises a molded nonconductive housing having a plurality of apertures therein for receiving electrically conductive terminals.
