A vehicle or other system includes an actuator assembly operable to achieve a selected operating state of the system in response to an electronic state selection signal, a push-button shifter assembly, and a controller. The shift assembly includes push-buttons, each including at least three redundant switches. A binary open/closed state of each switch defines the electronic state selection signal. The controller is in by-wire communication with the actuator and push-button shifter assemblies, and receives the electronic state selection signal. The controller determines a pressed, released, or unknown button state of each push-button by determining, in response to the electronic state selection signal, if all of the redundant switches have closed. If all of the redundant switches have not closed, the controller determines whether fewer than all of the switches have closed and opened within a calibrated time interval of each other.

A position diagnostic test for a shift-by-wire system is provided. The shift-by-wire system includes a shift lever configured to move along a shift path, a first and a second position sensor configured to generate a first and a second position signal, respectively, of the shift lever along the shift path, and a controller configured to receive the first and second position signals. The first position sensor includes a first x-coordinate value and a first y-coordinate value, and the second position sensor includes a second x-coordinate value and a second y-coordinate value. The position diagnostic test includes performing a rationality test on each of the coordinate values. If at least one predetermined condition exists for a particular coordinate value, then it fails the rationality test, and the position signal containing the coordinate value may be disregarded.

Position diagnostic test for a shift-by-wire system, and a method thereof

A method of monitoring an engine coolant system includes modeling the total energy stored within an engine coolant. If an actual temperature of the engine coolant is below a minimum target temperature, the modeled total energy stored within the energy coolant is compared to a maximum stored energy limit to determine if sufficient energy exists within the engine coolant to heat the engine coolant to a temperature equal to or greater than the minimum target temperature. The engine coolant system fails the diagnostic check when the modeled total energy stored within the energy coolant is greater than the maximum stored energy limit, and the minimum target temperature has not been reached.

Method of monitoring an engine coolant system of a vehicle

A method for determining a transmission range selection of a shift-by-wire system, which includes a shift lever, a park button, and a controller, is provided. The shift lever is movable between a plurality of transmission range positions, each corresponding to a transmission range, and a null position. The park button is switchable between a pressed position corresponding to a Park transmission range, and a released position. The method includes determining, by the controller, if at least one predetermined condition exists. If it does, then the controller determines the transmission range selection to be the Park transmission range. Otherwise, the controller determines the transmission range selection to be the transmission range corresponding to the transmission range position in which the shift lever is positioned.

Shift-by-wire system for a vehicle, and a transmission range selection method thereof

A system includes a pump control module and a pump diagnostic module. The pump control module switches a switchable water pump from off to on. The pump diagnostic module diagnoses a fault in the switchable water pump based on a first difference between an engine material temperature and an engine coolant temperature when the switchable water pump is switched from off to on. The engine coolant temperature is a temperature of coolant circulated through an engine and the engine material temperature is a temperature of at least one of an engine block and a cylinder head.

A system includes a temperature determination module and a flow determination module. The temperature determination module determines an engine coolant temperature based on input received from an engine coolant temperature sensor and determines an engine material temperature based on input received from an engine material temperature sensor. The engine coolant temperature is a temperature of coolant in an engine, and the engine material temperature is a temperature of at least one of an engine block and a cylinder head. The flow determination module selectively determines coolant flow through the engine based on the engine coolant temperature and the engine material temperature.

A diagnostic system for performing engine material temperature sensor diagnostics includes a coolant flow sensor configured to provide an indication of coolant flow within a coolant system; an engine state sensor configured to provide an indication of an operational state of an internal combustion engine; and a diagnostic module in communication with the coolant flow sensor and engine state sensor. The diagnostic module is configured to use the indication of coolant flow and the indication of an operational state of the internal combustion engine to estimate an amount of accumulated energy within the internal combustion engine.

System and method for performing engine material temperature sensor diagnostics

A diagnostic system includes a temperature derivative module and a heater use module. The temperature derivative module determines a derivative of a temperature of one of a fluid of an engine of a vehicle and a component of the engine measured by a temperature sensor after a vehicle startup event. The heater use module selectively indicates that an engine heater was used before the vehicle startup event based on the derivative.
