This invention relates to a multilayered film for use as in-mold label, comprising: a core layer having a first surface and a second surface, the core layer being comprised of a polymeric mixture and particulate solids dispersed in the polymeric mixture; and an ink-printable layer overlying the first surface of the core layer; the film being formed by co-extruding the core layer and ink-printable layer to form the multilayered film, hot-stretching the film at a temperature above the expected service temperature of the label to provide the film with a machine direction orientation, the density of the film being reduced by about 10% to about 25% during hot-stretching, and annealing the film at a temperature above the expected service temperature of the label; the film having a machine direction Gurley stiffness value in the range of about 30 to about 120, a machine direction shrinkage of less than about 3%, and a machine direction shrink tension at 200&#xb0; F. (93.3&#xb0; C.) of less than about 100 psi.

The present invention relates to a halogen-free, multilayered, uniaxially oriented heat shrink film comprising (A) a core layer comprising a blend of polyolefins; (B) a first skin layer on the upper surface of the core layer, and (C) a second skin layer on the lower surface of the core layer, wherein the first and second skin layers independently comprise a polyolefin blend and wherein the shrinkage of the film is at least about 40% in the machine direction at 270&deg; F. The present invention further relates to a label having an adhesive applied to at least a portion of at least one of the skin layers of the multilayered heat shrink film. An annular extrusion die for the production of a tubular thermoplastic film web material, such as an annular extrusion die including a filtering arrangement for the formulation of a more consistently or uniformly distributed polymer melt conveyed to the die orifice of the extrusion die which will impart improved properties to the extruded thermoplastic film material. Also disclosed is a method of producing an improved extruded thermoplastic film web material through the utilization of the inventive extrusion die arrangement. A cavity or die flow chamber within the body of the annular extrusion die is filled with a particulate inert material of either uniform granular size or of random sizes, so as to force the polymer melt being conveyed towards the die orifice to randomly flow through the interstices which are present between the particles of the granular material, and thereby uniformly fill the cavity.

There is provided a three-ply plastic film prepared by a sandwich foam, blown film coextrusion process. The outer skin layers are composed of high performance polyolefins, such as linear low density polyethylene. The foamed middle layer imparts to the film improved structural integrity and stiffness, an independent tear mechanism for the skin layers, and improved TD tear strength.

A method of forming plastic film bag bodies with draw strips comprises the steps of providing a continuous length of plastic film once folded to provide superposed panels and two free longitudinal edges opposite a fold edge, folding the two longitudinal free edges inwardly between the adjoining panels to provide a pair of longitudinal inwardly turned hems of double thickness, inserting a continuous material draw strip into each hem, joining together longitudinally the double layer thicknesses of each hem to form a channel along a longitudinal edge of each panel containing one of the continuous strips and transversely severing the material and strips at regular intervals to separate individual bag body lengths from the continuous web of material. Holes are punched along the folded hems of the bag before the draw tapes are inserted so as to allow access to the inserted tapes in the manufactured bag.

Method and apparatus for forming hems in superposed pliable panels

A method of inserting a continuous, pliable strip into each hem formed along an edge, an edge of one of a pair of superposed panels forming an elongated, continuous web, the hem being formed by turning an edge portion of a panel inward between the panels. Each strip is fed from a position outside the web on the hemmed side of the web, across the hem(s) to a position between the panels within the web, reversed in direction and fed to a position between the portions of the panel forming a hem. Each strip is then turned from a transverse direction to a longitudinal direction and fed longitudinally into the hem. An apparatus for performing the steps of the method is described for use in the manufacture of thermoplastic film draw strip bags and feeds a pair of extremely thin and flexible plastifilm strips into a pair of hems, each formed in one of a pair of superposed panels, eventually forming the sides of the finished bag. A suitable mechanism such as pinch rollers are provided downstream from the apparatus for advancing the web through the apparatus and drawing the web with inserted strips away from the apparatus.

A draw tape trash bag made of linear low density polyethylene film has a tack seal between the folded over hem portion of the top of the bag and the adjacent panel. The tack seal extends in the direction of extrusion across the width of the bag below the draw tape. It includes a continuous line of heat fused polyethylene formed by applying heat, but limited pressure, in an amount just sufficient to weld the polyethylene.
