A protocol-independent switch system and method includes wrapping ingress data with a local header to form a wrapped packet. The wrapped packet can include data in any of layer-1, layer-2, and layer-3 type. The local header is used for switching the wrapped packet across switch fabric. The local header is removed before egress of the data.

Transmitter-directed transmission security is provided between a transmit node and a receive node. The transmit node selects transmission format for each data frame based on a transmission security scenario. Information related to the transmission format is communicated between the transmit node and the receive node, and the data frames are transmitted over a wireless communication link using the selected transmission formats.

Physical layer quality of service is provided for a wireless communication system by operationally adapting the physical layer format to the quality of service requirements of transmitted data. The physical layer formats for the data packets are selected based on the quality of service requirements of the data packets. Control information defining the formats is transmitted across the wireless communication link and the data packets are transmitted using the selected physical layer formats.
