A low NOx gas combustor includes an air injection mechanism to create a combustion air path. A set of arc-shaped gas injector arrays are formed in an annular configuration. Each arc-shaped gas injector array injects an arc-shaped stream of gas that intersects with the combustion air path to produce a fuel rich flame segment that is separated from an adjacent fuel rich flame segment from an adjacent arc-shaped gas injector array by an air rich zone. The interaction between the fuel rich flame segment and the air rich zone results in low NOx combustion of the gas.

Apparatus and method for low-NOx gas combustion

A fluid atomizer and spraying means which is made up of: a mixing chamber into which the fluid to be atomized and the atomizing gas are introduced and in which the fluid is admixed with and dispersed in the gas; a generally conical nozzle means extending from the mixing chamber through which the mixed fluid and gas are forced; and a chamber into which the atomized mixed fluid and gas is sprayed. The conical nozzle means is suitably a relatively narrow frustro-conical passageway which contains support-spacer means which is generally parallel to the direction of flow through the passageway. At least one such support-spacer means is provided which extends from the end of the passageway proximate to the mixing chamber to the end of the passageway proximate to the chamber into which the mixture is sprayed. The preferred use of this apparatus is in atomizing fuel oil with steam and spraying such atomized mixture into a combustion chamber where it is contacted with combustion air. The amount of effluent NOX is reduced and limited by the use of this configuration by creating alternating fuel-rich and air-rich spatial distribution, and allowing the amount of stoichiometric excess air to be severely limited, while causing the substantially complete combustion of the fuel oil.

V-jet atomizer

Pulverized coal and air flowing-in a coal nozzle are distributed for combustion with low NOX generation by a concentric central duct with long exterior spiraling vanes which extend upstream and attach to a support pipe extending further upstream in the nozzle. The space from the downstream end of the support pipe to the upstream end of the central duct, and the cross section of the pipe relative to the cross section of the central duct regulate the entry of coal and air into the central duct from which the flow emerges with reduced velocity as a central stream stabilizing the flame. The central duct also has an exterior short vane attached to each long vane to separate the pulverized fuel and air outerflow into fuel-enriched swirling streams and fuel-depleted recirculation zones.

This invention pertains to methods for removal of pollution from the exhaust gas stream of combustion sources. More particularly, the invention relates to an improved method of elimination of particulate matte, sulfur dioxide (SO.sub.2) and volatile toxic materials from the flue gas of coal fired boilers, especially in large electric generating plants.
