Hybrid energy harvesting devices that harvest vibrational energy over a broad frequency spectrum using several different energy harvesting mechanisms that are operable over different frequency ranges. In one embodiment, a device uses an inductive current generator to convert vibrational energy at lower frequencies to electrical energy, and also uses one or more piezoelectric charge generators to convert vibrational energy at higher frequencies to electrical energy. The electrical energy produced by these different mechanisms is provided to a controller which processes the input energy and generates an output which is applied to an energy store such as a battery. The energy stored in the battery can then be drawn by a wireless sensor or other device. The energy harvesting device may have the same form factor as a conventional battery to allow installation in battery-powered equipment without modification.

Systems and methods for harvesting vibration energy using a hybrid device

A method of forming a high temperature sensor includes preparing a substrate having a surface from an electrically insulative material having a first coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), preparing an electrical conductor from a metal material having a second CTE that is different from the first CTE, and creating an interface between the electrical conductor and the substrate with a CTE blending medium that is provided between the substrate and the electrical conductor. The CTE blending medium accommodates differing thermal expansion rates of the substrate and the electrical conductor at temperatures of at least 700&#xb0; C.

Method of forming a high temperature sensor

Systems, methods, and devices are provided for aligning a reference axis of an accelerometer with a measurement axis of a machinery component. An adaptor including a mounting plate, a plate stud integrated within the mounting plate, and a screw can be coupled to an accelerometer to ensure proper alignment of the reference axis of the accelerometer with the measurement axis of the machinery component. Aligning the reference axis and the measurement axis using the adaptor ensures that the axial orientation of the vibration data collected by the accelerometer properly corresponds to the intended axis of measurement of the machinery component and thus allows for consistent, repeatable installations of the accelerometer onto the machinery component without introducing alignment errors which can generate erroneous vibration data with respect to one or more axes of measurement.

Triaxial accelerometer mounting adapter

A system for measuring torque on a component having a residually magnetized region is provided. The system includes a torque sensor for sensing an electromagnetic characteristic of the component and transmitting a plurality of signals that are indicative of the electromagnetic characteristic. The system also includes a computer communicatively coupled to the torque sensor for receiving the signals. The computer includes a processor and a memory. The processor is programmed to determine, using the signals, that the torque sensor is affected by the residually magnetized region of the component.

Self-testing proximity testing systems and corresponding methods are discussed herein and can include a proximity probe and controller in electrical communication via a cable. A self-testing subsystem can be in communication with the controller and configured to determine whether proximity probes and cables assembled with a controller are compatible or incompatible. The self-testing subsystem can place a known impedance in electrical communication with the controller, modifying a proximity signal output by the controller. When the modified proximity signal differs from a predicted proximity signal by greater than or equal to a threshold amount, the self-testing subsystem can output a first indication indicating that incompatible proximity probes and cables are assembled with a controller. When the modified proximity signal differs from a predicted proximity signal by less than the threshold amount, the self-testing subsystem can output a second indication indicating that compatible proximity probes and cables are assembled with a controller.

Proximity sensing system with component compatibility testing

A system may include a first sensor and a second sensor. The first sensor may include a driving pole that includes a driving coil that receives a driving current and emits a magnetic flux portion through a structure. The first sensor may also include a sensing pole that may include a sensing coil that receives the magnetic flux portion and generate a first signal based at least in part on the received magnetic flux portion. The first signal is based at least in part on a force on the structure. The second sensor may be disposed on the driving pole and may generate a second signal representative of a distance between the driving pole and the structure. The system may also include a circuit that may adjust the first signal based on the second signal.

Systems and methods for compensating for air gap sensitivity in torque sensors

A temperature compensated torque sensing system and methods for using the same are provided. The system can include a sensor head in electrical communication with a controller. The sensor head can contain a torque sensor including a core, a driving coil and a sensing coil. The sensor head can also include a temperature sensor coupled to the sensor head. The torque sensor can be configured to measure torque applied to a selected portion of a target based upon magnetic flux passing through the target, while the temperature sensor can be configured to concurrently measure the target temperature. The temperature sensor can be positioned for avoiding interference with sensed magnetic flux. The controller can adjust the determined torque using the temperature measurements to compensate for changes in magnetic properties of the target due to variation in target temperature. In this manner, the accuracy of the torque measurements can be increased.

Temperature compensated torque sensor

A sensor system for positioning, orienting, and/or aligning a sensor assembly to a target object are provided. In some embodiments, the sensor system can include a sensor assembly and a control and processing module coupled to the sensor assembly. The control and processing module can be configured to process signals generate by the sensor assembly. The sensor system can include a mounting assembly configured to receive the sensor assembly and to position the sensor assembly relative to a surface of a target object. The mounting assembly can include a retaining element configured to translate along a first axis.

Non-contact magnetostrictive sensor alignment

A pressure compensated sensing system and methods for using the same are provided. The system can include a housing, a seal, an incompressible fluid, and sensing elements. The seal can be positioned within a housing cavity and divide the cavity into two portions. A first cavity portion can be sealed from the fluid environment by the seal and contain the sensing elements and the incompressible fluid. A second cavity portion can be in fluid communication with the fluid environment. The fluid environment can apply an external pressure to the seal that is opposed by an internal pressure of the sealed cavity applied to the seal by the incompressible fluid. When the internal pressure and the external pressure are different, the seal can move in a manner that changes the volume of the sealed cavity by an amount sufficient to equalize the internal pressure with the external pressure.

Pressure compensated sensors

A calibration apparatus is configured to calibrate a magnetostrictive sensor. The magnetostrictive sensor is configured to measure an object and comprises a sensing element positioned adjacent to the object. The calibration apparatus comprises an estimation device and a calibrator. The estimation device is configured to estimate at least one of a gap between the sensing element and the object and a temperature of the object to obtain at least one of an estimated gap and an estimated temperature, based on geometric information, an excitation signal and an output signal of the magnetostrictive sensor, and geometric information of the object. The calibrator is configured to reduce an effect on the output signal of the magnetostrictive sensor imposed by variations in the at least one of the gap and the temperature, based on the at least one of the estimated gap and the estimated temperature, to obtain a calibrated output signal.

Calibration apparatus, calibration method, and measuring system

Systems, methods, and devices for positioning, orienting, and/or aligning a stress sensor assembly are provided. In some embodiments, a sensor assembly can be received within a retaining element of a sensor mounting assembly. The sensor mounting assembly can include the retaining element, an adjustment mechanism, a first member, a second member, and a third member. The adjustment mechanism can allow the sensor assembly to be displaced linearly in a proximal and/or distal direction. The first and second members can be pivotally coupled to enable the sensor assembly to be rotated about a first axis, and the second and third members can be pivotally coupled to allow the sensor assembly to be rotated about a second axis.

A system includes a plurality of sensors configured to detect an electrical voltage and an electrical leakage current associated with an operation of an industrial machine, and a controller including a processor and a selection device. The selection device is configured to receive from the plurality of sensors a first input corresponding to the electrical voltage, and a second input corresponding to the electrical leakage current. The first input is paired with the second input to generate a paired input. The selection device is configured to transmit an output to the processor based at least in part on the paired input. The output includes an indication of the electrical leakage current or a dissipation factor associated with the industrial machine.

Systems and methods for monitoring leakage current of an industrial machine

Integrated penetrator and proximity sensor probe assemblies are provided for monitoring a position of a rotating target within a subsea rotating device such as subsea motors and pumps. The integrated penetrator and proximity sensor probe assemblies are configured to communicate information related to the position of the rotating target through a wall of the device housing, and can be inserted through an opening in the wall of the device housing and mounted to the wall of the device to position a proximity sensor tip assembly adjacent the rotating target. The proximity sensor probe assemblies are pressure-compensated and configured to withstand subsea pressures and conditions.

Subsea sensor assemblies

A gap compensated torque sensing system and methods for using the same are provided. The system can include a magnetostrictive torque sensor and at least one proximity sensor in communication with a controller. The proximity sensor can be substantially rigidly coupled to a sensor head of the torque sensor, either contained within the sensor head or mounted proximate to the sensor head using a bracket or other coupling mechanism. The torque sensor can sense magnetic flux passing through the target and the proximity sensor can measure a gap between itself and the target. The controller can estimate torque applied to the target from magnetic flux sensed by the torque sensor. The estimated torque can be modified by the gap measurement to compensate for changes in magnetic properties of the target due to variations in the gap. In this manner, the accuracy of the torque measurements can be increased.

Integration of proximity sensors with magnetostrictive torque sensors

A gap compensated torque sensing system and methods for using the same are provided. The system can include a sensor head in communication with a controller. The sensor head can contain a torque sensor and a proximity sensor coupled to the sensor head. The torque and proximity sensors can each sense magnetic fluxes passing through the target and a gap between the sensor head and the target. The controller can estimate torque applied to the target from magnetic fluxes sensed by the torque sensor. The controller can determine an improved gap measurement that is independent of electromagnetic properties of the target from magnetic fluxes sensed by the torque and proximity sensors. The estimated torque can be modified by the improved gap measurement to compensate for changes in magnetic properties of the target due to variations in the gap. In this manner, the accuracy of the torque measurements can be increased.
