There is provided a method and apparatus for allocating transmission resources in a wireless network in which some of the terminals communicate with the base station by exchanging communication frames that are compatible with a first communication protocol while other terminals receive communications from the base station that are compatible with a second communication protocol by using non-standardized communication frames or communication frames that are compatible with another standardized protocol. The base station transmits a plurality of frames, some of which are compatible with the first communication protocol while others&#x2014;with the second communication protocol. The terminals that are operative to receive frames of the second communication protocol are capable of decoding frames that are compatible with both communication protocols, whereas terminals that are operative to receive frames of the first communication protocol are capable of decoding only standardized communication frames of the first communication protocol.

Method and apparatus for improving transmission reliability in wireless communications network

A method for detecting and/or estimating a ranging signal in a wireless communications network, wherein the ranging signal comprises a plurality of tiles. The method includes (i) for two or more of the plurality of tiles, carrying out a plurality of mathematical correlations for one or more of the plurality of tiles but less than all of the plurality of tiles products between subcarriers, wherein at least one of the plurality of products is carried out between non-adjacent subcarriers associated with one of the two or more of the plurality of tiles; (ii) summing the results of the correlations products, thereby obtaining mathematical correlations that make up summed results; and (iii) based on the summed results, detecting a code characterizing the ranging signal and/or estimating the timing offset of the ranging signal.

Method and device for handling ranging signals in a wireless communications network

In a wireless network comprising at least a first and a second wireless communication devices, a method is provided for determining at least one characteristic for communication between a base station and a subscriber terminal, based on information derived by affecting an exponential effective signal to interference ratio mapping (EESM) upon one or more signals transmitted by the base station and received by the subscriber terminal.

Establishing parameters for transmissions in wireless communications network

In a wireless network employing Spatial Division Multiplexing Access ('SDMA') in at least one of its cells, a method is provided for dynamically allocating transmission resources to different subscriber devices. The method comprises the steps of: providing at least one base station comprising at least one antenna array; providing one or more sectors associated with that wireless communications network; dynamically dividing one or more of the sectors into a plurality of virtual sub-sectors, each allowing communications between the base station and at least one respective subscriber; from among the plurality of the virtual sub-sectors, selecting at least one pair of subscriber devices wherein each of the pair of subscriber devices is not interfered substantially by transmissions directed to the other subscriber of that pair; for each of the divided sectors, generating plurality of time frequency allocation maps; transmitting the generated maps to all virtual sub-sectors associated with the respective sector; and for each of the sectors, beamforming the transmissions to be conveyed to the subscriber devices' pairs, summing them and conveying the summed result towards the array antenna.

Wireless communications in a multi-sector network

A method is provided for estimating a signal received at a wireless cell along a channel where the frequency used for conveying traffic is substantially equal to frequency used for conveying traffic along at least one other channel extending from/to at least one substantially interfering cell. The method comprises: associating a pilot sequence with operative cells; providing a receiver with information to allow estimation of the pilot sequence by a respective transmitter; providing the receiver with information to allow estimation of pilot sequences associated with other transmitters communicating with other receivers located at the geographical proximity of that receiver; estimating the signal associated with the pilot sequence used by the first transmitter; subtracting the estimated signal from an input signal received by that receiver; estimating the pilot signal associated with a pilot sequence used by other transmitters; and modifying the estimation of the pilot signal used by the first transmitter.
