A system and method for using a microscope to at least haptically observe a specimen in a fluid is provided. In one embodiment of the present invention, an audio frequency modulation sensing (AFMS) device is used to convert an optical signal from the specimen into an electrical signal. A haptic feedback device is then used to convert the electrical signal in at least vibrations, thereby providing a user with haptic feedback associated with the optical signal from the specimen. In another embodiment, a second electrical signal can be provided to a second haptic feedback (e.g., shaker, piezo electric, electric current inducing, etc.) device in the fluid, thereby allowing for bidirectional haptic feedback between the user and the specimen. In other embodiments, aural data can be extracted from the electrical signal and presented to the user either alone in in synchronization with video data (e.g., from a video camera).

Haptic feedback microscope

A system and method for using a microscope to aurally observe a specimen in a fluid is provided. In one embodiment of the present invention, the microscope is modified to include a first beam splitter, splitting a visual of the specimen magnified by the objective lens. A first beam is then provided to an audio frequency modulation sensing (AFMS) device, whose function is to sense photoacoustic modulation of the specimen and to extract aural data, allowing sound energy to be observed by a user (e.g., displayed on screen, played on a speaker, etc.). The second beam is provided to a second beam splitter, allowing visuals to be provided to the eyepiece and to at least one other sensor, where a second visual of the specimen is captured. The second visual can then be displayed on a screen in time synchronization with aural data provided by the AFMS device.

Devices and method for obtaining or providing listening or detection of audio frequency modulated optical energy including, involving, utilizing, facilitating and/or providing an interface (including electronics) configured such that when operatively connected to individual or groups of elements of one or more solar arrays (or cells, photodetectors, or other optical sensor device), respectively, the interface and the solar array(s) together function, responsive to sensed audio-frequency light intensity fluctuations of an optical signal received by said solar array(s), as a remote acoustic sensor (RAS)-based device.

Electrosound camera

A time space coherence interferometer (TSCI) system is provided. In one embodiment of the present invention the TSCI system includes an interferometer in communication with an RF source and a receiver. The interferometer includes a first switch, a second switch, a transmit element, a receive element and a sequencer circuit, wherein the sequencer circuit is configured to alternate the first and second switches between first and second configurations. In a first configuration, the signal from the RF source is provided to the transmit element, where it is communicated to the receive element via a signal path, and provided to the receiver. In the second configuration, the signal from the RF source is provided to the receiver via a reference path. The switching sequence results in a complex ratio of the signal path signal to the reference path signal (e.g., an S21 transmission ratio) being provided to the receiver.

This Passive Long Range Acoustical Sensor relates to means of sensing acoustical sources and signals, including multi-channel acoustical signals, such as various types of sounds, vibrations, flutter, turbulence, and the like, and at long distances through a natural optical channel, without the use of a laser or other artificial illuminating means. A modified multi-channel embodiment of the Passive Long Range Acoustical Sensor may use a combination of natural optical channels and active illumination means, such as laser or other artificial illuminating means, of producing additional optical channels.

A Cartesian robot comprises a base member disposed along an x-axis, a transverse member moveably mounted to the base member, and disposed along a y-axis transverse to the x-axis. The robot has a y-carriage for a measurement probe moveably mounted to the transverse member along the y-axis. The x, y, and z axes define a Cartesian coordinate system. The robot includes an innovative structure that achieves high precision with respect to the z-axis by providing a planarized and stable reference surface along the y-axis (vertical axis). The position of the y-carriage with respect to a z-axis is a predictable function of the measured position of the y-carriage on the reference surface, and rigid-body tilt of the reference surface. High accuracy and precision are achieved by utilizing a granite slab for providing the planarized reference surface disposed along the y-axis for the transverse member. The granite slab is supported by a structural frame, and a measurement probe may be mounted to a y-carriage which is moveably mounted to the reference surface of the granite slab. The Cartesian robot is especially suitable for near-field antenna-measuring scanners that require high precision, such as scanners for high-frequency antenna.

A two-axis measurement system for use with an article under test (AUT) is provided with a thermal control system to maintain the measurement system at a stable temperature. The thermal control system may be use a temperature-controlled fluid, such as liquid or gas, conducted through the measurement system. The measurement system further comprises a field probing sensor that is adapted to be positioned at a plurality of points spaced from the AUT to perform a measurement of the AUT. The probing sensor is manipulated by at least a first member extending in a first axial direction and a second member extending in a second axial direction perpendicular to the first axial direction. A near-field measurement of the AUT is performed by moving the field probing sensor in a pattern in front of the AUT to sample the RF energy of the AUT at a plurality of points. Internal passageways provided through the first and second members permit communication of the temperature-controlled fluid therethrough.

Thermal control apparatus for two-axis measurement system

A high precision alignment apparatus is provided that utilizes a semiconductor laser device, such as a laser diode, to provide a source laser beam. The alignment apparatus permits the division of a pair of beam components from the source laser beam useful for either linear or planar alignment. A centroid measurement between the beam components provides a corrected reference point that accounts for the inherent instability of the source laser beam to yield a high level of alignment accuracy. For linear alignment purposes, the beam components are collinearly directed. In the alternative, for planar alignment purposes, the beam components may be either collinear or directed in opposite directions, and rotated to sweep respective planar regions. The laser alignment apparatus is capable of providing a level of accuracy heretofore achievable only with gas lasers, while maintaining the economical attributes of commercial semiconductor laser diodes.

A two-axis measurement system includes a structural support frame having at least two horizontally disposed parallel rails defining a length of the structural support frame at opposite sides thereof. The support frame further defines a test space between the opposite sides. A bridge extends perpendicularly between the rails and is capable of controlled movement along the rails over the length of the structural support frame. A first probe carriage carried by the bridge permits controlled movement along a span of the bridge. A vertical tower is coupled to the bridge orthogonally with the rails, and a second probe carriage is carried by the vertical tower permitting controlled movement along a height of the vertical tower. The first probe carriage is selectively moveable within a horizontal test plane defined in a first axial dimension by the rails and in a second axial dimension by the bridge by cooperative movement of the bridge and the first probe carriage. The second probe carriage is selectively moveable within a vertical test plane defined in the first axial dimension by the rails and in a third axial dimension by the vertical tower by cooperative movement of the bridge and the second probe carriage.

A three-axis motion tracking interferometer for use with an article under test (AUT) is provided for measurement and correction of position errors between the AUT and a near-field probing sensor due to thermal drift. The probing sensor is positioned at a plurality of points relative to the AUT to perform a phase front measurement of the AUT. Periodically, the probing sensor is positioned at a subset of the plurality of points, the subset being sufficient to define a geometric surface, such as a plane, cylinder, or sphere. A distance change measurement is performed between the AUT and the probing sensor at each of the subset of points, and three-axis components of relative motion between the AUT and the probing sensor are calculated based upon the distance change measurement. The phase front measurement of the AUT can then be corrected based upon the three-axis components.
