A technique of mapping data, suitable for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction while transmitting data portions via a communication channel limited by a peak power p. The mapping is performed by utilizing a Markovian symbol transition probability distribution with quantized probabilities and by selecting, for a specific data portion at a current channel state, such a binary symbol (called thinned label) which allows puncturing one or more bits in the thinned label's bit sequence before transmission.

Technique for PAPR reduction in communication channel

A method of estimating a position of an object is disclosed. The method comprises receiving a plurality of signals transmitted between each of a respective plurality of reference stations of a known position and the object. The method further comprises, for each received signal: processing the signal using a matrix featuring a characteristic power delay profile and a characteristic signal waveform to provide a processed signal, and calculating a direct estimate of the position of the object based, at least in part, on the processed signals.

Method and system for estimating position

A method for providing security and maintenance of a group of devices using a group of tags. Each of the tags is attached to a device and includes a radio frequency transceiver for intercommunicating using ultra-wide band signals. Using the intercommunication, distance between two of the tags is determined and an alarm is triggered when the distance is greater than a threshold distance. The distance is preferably determined by measuring a round trip delay time between the transmission of a transmitted unicast signal to the other tag and reception of a unicast response signal in response to the transmitted signal. A configuration mechanism is typically used for configuring the group and removed upon completing the configuration, and the tags maintain the group and provide security by the intercommunication between the tags. The tags are preferably synchronized to transmit and receive solely during a previously determined periodic sequence of time intervals.

The subject matter discloses a flash analog to digital converter arranged in a tree of signal amendment units, each comprises an amplifier and an offset adder. The output signals of the tree are even partitioned and compared to comparators, to reduce the level of accuracy required from the comparators. The subject matter also discloses a cascade of amplifiers connected in series and operate in delay one relative to the other, each amplifier comprises a reset unit to reset the amplifier responsive to receipt of a signal.

Method and system for flash type analog to digital converter

A low current single chip oscillator timing circuit which includes a dual mode capacitor circuit having a larger capacitance mode and a smaller capacitance mode having a fixed ratio. The timing circuit also includes an oscillator circuit that uses the dual mode capacitor circuit as a part of its time base wherein the large capacitance mode is operated with low power consumption and as needed includes a circuit that generates a reference pulse, wherein the short pulse and the reference pulse are compared and the result is used for correction to the oscillator frequency to create a feedback loop.

Low current single chip oscillator timing circuit

A system capable of monitoring an area and detecting a disturbance with the area. The system has a plurality of ultra-wide band radio frequency tags, each of the tags including a digital signal processing module configured to monitor changes in radio frequency multipath properties of received packets transmitted by at least one other of the tags. Changes in the radio frequency multipath properties may be caused by a disturbance indicative of an object in the vicinity of the tags. A corresponding method is also disclosed.

A decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for equalizing PAM-N signals comprises a coefficient setting unit for setting a first group of most significant feedback coefficients of the DFE to a predefined value selected from a group of predefined values; a coefficients computation unit coupled to the coefficient setting unit for computing values of feedback coefficients of a second group of feedback coefficients other than the first group of most significant feedback coefficients; a feedback (FB) unit for mitigating, using a complete group of feedback coefficients, effects of interference from data symbols that are adjacent in time to an input data symbol, wherein most significant feedback coefficients of the first group are set to an optimal value computed during an initialization of the DFE and feedback coefficients of the second group are computed by the coefficients computation unit.

Techniques for setting feedback coefficients of a PAM-N decision feedback equalizer

A PAM-N decision feedback equalizer (DFE) comprises a coefficient computation unit; a feedback unit that mitigates, using computed feedback coefficients, effects of interference from data symbols; an error-and-decision unit for at least computing a least error value respective to one of a plurality of decision levels, wherein the least error value indicates a difference of a pseudo equalized input PAM-N data symbol from an optimal position of the one of the plurality of decision levels, wherein the one of the plurality of decision levels corresponds to a modulation level used to modulate data in the input PAM-N data symbol; and a calibration unit for adaptively setting the plurality of decision levels based, in part, on the least error value, thereby enabling for compensating for gain changes resulted by a cable on which the input PAM-N data symbol is received and further compensating for embedded offsets of the error-and-decision unit.

Techniques for adaptively adjusting decision levels of a PAM-N decision feedback equalizer

A method for communicating between elements including a reader and tags of a radio frequency identification system. The method includes addressing a wide-band-message signal by including in the signal an identifier of the first tag. The addressed wide-band-message signal is transmitted by the reader. A first tag waits to receive the addressed wide-band-message signal; and upon receiving the addressed wide-band-message signal and recognizing the identifier, the first tag responds to the addressed wide-band-message signal by transmitting an addressed wide-band response signal either back to the reader or to a relaying tag. The tag relays to another element of the system by transferring at least one datum of the query from the addressed wide-band-message signal to the addressed wide-band response signal, where the elements are readers or tags. The system and method allow for many parallel wide band addressed links, and for position determination using at least two tags with known locations.

Communication and distance measurement in an addressed wide band RFID system

A method of providing security and maintenance of a group of devices using a group of tags. Each of the tags is attached to a device and includes a radio frequency transceiver for intercommunicating using ultra-wide band signals. Using the intercommunication, distance between two of the tags is determined and an alarm is triggered when the distance is greater than a previously defined threshold distance. The distance is preferably determined by measuring a round trip delay time between the transmission of a transmitted signal to the other tag and reception of a response signal in response to the transmitted signal from the other tag. The distance is preferably determined by measuring a time delay between transmitting a unicast ultra-wide band message and receiving a unicast response message. The intercommunication preferably uses ultra-wide band signals which relay information regarding completeness of the group between the tags of the group. A configuration mechanism is typically used for configuring the group. Upon completing the configuration, the configuration mechanism, e.g. reader or monitor, may be removed and the tags maintain the group and provide security by the intercommunication between the tags. The tags are preferably synchronized to transmit and receive solely during a previously determined periodic sequence of time intervals.

A method for synchronizing on a pulsed waveform sequence including pulsed waveforms. An impulse radio receiver is provided including a radio frequency (RF) front end connected to a demodulator, and the demodulator is connected to a processing unit. Power is provided to at least a portion of an RF component such as the RF front end and/or the demodulator, during time windows sufficient for testing an hypothesis regarding timing of the pulsed waveforms. The powering is controlled by the processing unit. Preferably, testing the hypothesis includes accumulating a signal of the pulsed waveforms, correlating with the pulsed waveforms, or accumulating the correlation result of the pulsed waveforms. Preferably, others functions of the receiver are powered or enabled subsequent to the testing. Preferably, the impulse radio receiver is an ultra-wide band receiver.

Low power fast impulse radio synchronization

A novel and useful media access control (MAC) protocol that is intended for use over noisy shared media channels. The MAC protocol provides layerfunctionality over a network using a shared medium including a backoff mechanism for CSMA/CA channel access, link addressing that reduces the overhead of long MAC addresses, a flooding scheme having controlled exposure for broadcast transmissions, multicast transmissions using selective ACKs, implementation of traffic prioritization using an adaptive backoff scheme, a second layer repeater establishment process and multi-packet transport for short packets and fragmentation for long packet transport.

Channel access method for powerline carrier based media access control protocol

The present invention relates to a method and system () for distance determination of RF tags () and its applications based on measuring the round trip delay, avoiding deterministic collisions between a plurality of wide band response signals transmitted by the tags () by adding a pseudo-random time delay to the wide band response signal, and iteratively reducing the collision probability between plurality of wide band response signals.

Method and system for distance determination of RF tags

An active radio frequency identification (REID) tag implemented on a flat label. The tag includes a battery printed on the label, a flat wide-band antenna printed on the label and a wide band communication circuit implemented as a chip inlay inside the label. The circuit is attached to the battery and to the antenna. The combined thickness of the battery, the antenna and the circuit as printed on the flexible label is less than one millimeter. The battery, the antenna and the circuit are printed on the label so as to render substantial flexibility to the RFID tag. The circuit operates at a center frequency of at least one gigahertz and a bandwidth at least twenty percent of said center frequency or a bandwidth at least 500 Mhz. The tag typically includes an inaccurate clock source such as an RC circuit and does not include a crystal. Average power consumption of the battery is preferably reduced by operating the tag with a low duty ratio between an active and an inactive interval; and during the active interval transmitting in bursts while turning off parts of the tag between the bursts. The communications circuit performs timing measurements on incoming received waveforms and transmits transmit signals in response to the received waveforms with timing based on the timing measurements. The receiver circuitry locks on a repetition frequency of the incoming received waveforms, and based on the repetition frequency generates a pulse repetition frequency of the transmit signals.

Wide band RFID system with tag on flexible label

A novel and useful acquisition and synchronization mechanism for spread spectrum communication systems whereby a synchronization sequence comprising a plurality of known symbols spaced apart by predefined time delay intervals is transmitted as the start of packet signal. At the transmitter, a synchronization sequence is transmitted at the beginning of each packet. A synchronization sequence is generated which includes a plurality of symbols with predefined time gaps between each of the symbols. Multiple synchronization sequences may be generated wherein each sequence comprises a unique set of time delays or gaps between each of the symbols. Each set of unique time delays or gaps between symbols of a sequence is stored as a synchronization sequence gap template in memory. When required to generate a synchronization sequence, the sequence generator outputs the plurality of synchronization symbols and inserts a specific time delay between each of the symbols in accordance with the contents of the gap template for the particular synchronization sequence.
