A method for switching the use of a shared set of wireless I/O devices between multiple computers. The method of one embodiment comprises receiving a wireless request at a first machine to switch control of a device to a second machine. Control of the device is relinquished at said first machine. A token is transferred from the first machine to the second machine. Wireless control of the device is established at the second machine.

A method, apparatus and system to enable a data processing device to operate while seemingly 'off'. According to one embodiment, a data processing device is configured to recognize a new system state, i.e., Visual Off. On such a data processing device, when the power button is pressed, the request to turn off the device is intercepted by a module and the device is transitioned to a Visual Off state. To the user, this transition appears instantaneous. During the transition, audible and visual indicators on the data processing device and on human interactive devices ('HID devices') coupled to the data processing device may be turned off and/or disabled. While in the Visual Off state, the device may be fully operational, or in an alternate embodiment, the device may be placed in a low power state. When the user presses the power button again to &#x201c;wake up&#x201d; the data processing device, the device may transition from Visual Off into an &#x201c;on&#x201d; state (&#x201c;Visual On&#x201d;), i.e., all audible and visual indicators on the data processing device and HID devices coupled to it may be turned back on and/or enabled.

A system is provided with a basic input/output system (BIOS) with the ability to intervene, when a suspend process is initiated in response to an AC failure condition to place the system in a suspended to memory state, to initiate a number of data transfer operations to save a persistent copy of an operational state of the system. The BIOS is further equipped to check one or more times whether the data transfer operations are completed, and causing a processor of the system to operate in a reduced power consumption mode at least one time period while the BIOS is not performing the checking.

A method for managing idle processing in a computer system is described. An Idle Chain Manager virtual device driver (VxD) address is registered on an idle callback chain on the computer system. An Idle Chain Manager callback function corresponding with the Idle Chain Manager VxD address is hooked with a registration service on the computer system. This allows the Idle Chain Manager callback function to intercept a request from a VxD to register a VxD idle callback address onto the idle callback chain and registers the VxD idle callback address with the Idle Chain Manager callback function. The Idle Chain Manager VxD address is called when the idle processing is required.
