Reinforced metallic or intermetallic alloy matrix composite materials which are reinforced by the incorporation of preferably small-diameter ceramic fibers infiltrated within a metal bonding layer. The bonding layer comprises a foil, such as copper, which forms a molten eutectic alloy with the major metal of the matrix alloy, such as titanium, and infiltrates the fibers to form a unitary reinforced composite.

A combination of unique properties of (i) high strength and stiffness at temperatures up to about 1500.degree. F., (ii) good room temperature mechanical properties including good ductility and (iii) improved resistance to matrix cracking is achieved in a titanium structure by forming a hybrid titanium alloy matrix composite in which the matrix consists of layers of at least two alloys, i.e. a high temperature-resistant titanium aluminide alloy and a ductile, lower modulus titanium alloy, that are bonded metallurgically to each other in various embodiments. A reinforcing material in the form of filaments, fibers or whiskers, e.g. silicon carbide, can be embedded within either or both types of the titanium layers.

Hybrid titanium alloy matrix composites

Disclosed is a novel three-layered metallic interlayer material which provides good diffusion bonding between titanium alloys and steel or between titanium alloys and nickel alloys. The interlayer is comprised of three separate layers of metals as follows: a nickel layer which is placed in contact with the steel or nickel alloys, a Group V-B metal layer which is placed in contact with the titanium alloy and a copper layer which is sandwiched between the nickel and the Group V-B metal layers.
