Polycarbonates made from polyhydric phenols that preferably exhibit estrogenic activity less than bisphenol S exhibit properties such as high impact strengths, moderate to high glass transition temperatures, chemical resistance, and good color and clarity similar to conventional BPA-derived polycarbonates.

A polymer useful in coating compositions is described. The polymer is preferably an unsaturated polyurethane polymer, which preferably has an iodine value of at least 10. The polymer may be combined with one or more liquid carriers to form a liquid coating composition useful in coating a variety of substrates, including planar metal substrates.

Polyurethane coating composition

A coating composition is described. The coating composition preferably includes an unsaturated polymer such as, for example, an unsaturated polyester polymer; an ether component including one or more ether groups; and an optional liquid carrier. In preferred embodiments, the unsaturated polymer preferably has an iodine value of at least 10. The coating composition is useful in coating a variety of substrates, including planar metal substrates.

A coating system, a method of coating a substrate, and a coated substrate (e.g., a coated cement fiberboard article) include one or more latex polymers, an aliphatic epoxy resin system, optionally a silicate additive, and optionally one or more olefinic compounds and an initiator. The coating system may be applied in one or more layers and may be applied to all the surfaces of the substrate (e.g., the front side, back side and edges of a board). The coated substrate may then be coated with other optional coatings, e.g., decorative or protective topcoats.
