Fabricated axles with a removable king pin are disclosed. The fabricated axles incorporate U-shaped channel construction. Extensions of front and rear channel walls wrap partially around and separately join axle head plates which support a removable king pin. King pin fastener bores are partially defined by the head plate and by front and rear channel walls. The bottom surface of the head plate is received within an opening of, and secured to, the bottom plate which overlays the channel.

A clamp group for a vehicle leaf spring suspension is disclosed. The clamp group secures a longitudinally disposed, leaf spring at separate and distinct locations, between which the leaf spring is undamped and spaced away from the top and bottom pads of the clamp group. Shear stress is reduced and the spring remains active throughout its length.

Liner assemblies for axle brackets of axle coupling assemblies are disclosed. The liner assemblies include a body having an elongated base and at least one extension member having a connector. Liner assembly and axle bracket combinations and method of connecting liner assemblies to axle brackets also are disclosed, with the liner assemblies including a body having an elongated base and at least one extension member having at least one connector, with the axle brackets including a body having a central portion and including at least one connector receiver configured to receive the at least one connector of the at least one extension member of the liner assemblies.

A tie rod arm is provided for incorporation into a vehicle steering assembly. The tie rod arm has a grease cap portion with a steering knuckle connection formation and a grease seal cap. The steering knuckle connection formation is used to connect the tie rod arm to the body of a steering knuckle of the vehicle steering assembly. The grease seal cap receives the lower end of a kingpin of the vehicle steering assembly. The grease cap portion of the tie rod arm is integrally formed with an arm portion, which includes a tie rod connection formation to connect the tie rod arm to a tie rod of the vehicle steering assembly. A steering arm may also or alternatively be connected to the body of the steering knuckle and include an upper grease seal cap, which receives the upper end of the kingpin.

A mechanical fastener assembly is provided for joining two or more workpieces. The assembly includes a mechanical fastener and a slotted insert. The mechanical fastener has a shaft received within aligned bores of the workpieces. The slotted insert surrounds at least a portion of the shaft and has a body portion received within the aligned bores, while an enlarged head portion of the slotted insert is positioned outside of the bores. The mechanical fastener assembly may further include a retaining sleeve when the bores of the workpieces have different diameters. In such case, a midsection of the retaining sleeve is at least partially received within the bore having the smaller diameter, while an enlarged end section of the retaining sleeve is at least partially received within the bore having the greater diameter. The retaining sleeve may be used in combination with or independently of the slotted insert.

Systems and methods for improving bolted joints

A mechanical fastener assembly is provided for joining two or more workpieces. The assembly includes a mechanical fastener and a slotted collar. The mechanical fastener has a shaft received within aligned bores of the workpieces, while the slotted collar surrounds at least a portion of the shaft and is also received within the aligned bores. Inserting and advancing the slotted collar into the aligned bores causes the slot of the slotted collar to at least partially close, thereby causing an inner surface of the slotted collar to engage at least a portion of the shaft of the mechanical fastener and an outer surface of the slotted collar to engage at least a portion of the aligned bores of the two workpieces. Such a mechanical fastener assembly can effectively transform a bolted joint into a stronger shear joint.

An axle mounting assembly for coupling a vehicle axle to an energy storing suspension component. The assembly includes a mounting pad, and a longitudinally extending energy storing suspension component such as a leaf spring is vertically aligned with respect to the mounting pad. An axle seat bracket is vertically aligned with and spaced from the mounting pad. The axle is transversely mounted to the axle seat bracket which includes at least one horizontally aligned open passage that is aligned parallel to the axle and which receives a U-shaped fastener assembly for coupling the axle and axle seat bracket to the mounting pad.

Motor vehicle axle suspension with longitudinal leaf spring

A spring seat is provided for incorporation into a vehicle suspension system having an axle and a leaf spring. The spring seat includes a seat portion and a spring mounting portion associated with an upper end of the seat portion. The spring mounting portion is configured to accommodate a portion of the leaf spring and includes an upper surface. The upper surface defines a plurality of bores, with at least one of the bores being internally threaded and receiving at least a portion of an externally threaded mechanical fastener. Alternatively (or additionally), the axle may include a body, with at least one of the bores of the spring mounting portion of the spring seat being at least partially positioned directly above the body of the axle.

A V-rod assembly having a V-shaped member with a vertex for attachment to an axle and with first and second extending arms that attach to first and second arm brackets respectively, first and second gussets each with a first plurality of holes for attachment to the first and second arm brackets respectively, and corresponding to a first plurality of holes on a first plate and a second plate respectively, and each arm bracket with a plurality of holes for attachment to a cross member, the first and second plates having a second plurality of holes for attachment to the cross member, wherein the first plurality of holes on the first and second gussets comprise longitudinally extending slots that accommodate relative longitudinal movement of the first plurality of holes on the first and second plates with respect to the second plurality of holes on first and second plates respectively.

An axle coupling assembly and method for coupling a vehicle axle to an energy storing suspension component are disclosed. The assembly includes first and second U-shaped fastener assemblies, first and second flanges configured for connection to the vehicle axle, a mounting pad and a suspension component such as a leaf spring or a leading or trailing arm disposed between the first and second flanges and mounting pad.

Reduced weight axle coupling assembly for vehicle suspension systems

Suspension systems, leaf springs and methods of providing a leaf spring in a suspension system are disclosed. The suspension systems, leaf springs and methods of providing a leaf spring in a suspension system allow use of a lighter weight leaf spring while providing customized roll stiffness and vertical spring rate that are complemented by a bumper that engages the leaf spring assembly when compressed to at least a preselected position.
