Treatment of subjects experiencing cerebral ischemia is improved when the treatment employs a thrombolytic and an inhibitor against vascular endothelial growth factor receptor signal transduction (VEGF-RST) at a reduced, low dosage compared to that used to treat cancer patients. The treatment is also improved to permit point-of-care use by formulating protein drugs for long term stability at room temperature, providing doses appropriate for the method, and by combining the therapeutic agents with a point-of-care diagnostic for blood brain barrier integrity.

The present invention relates to systems and methods for assessing brain health and detecting neurological conditions. The invention more particularly relates to systems and methods for diagnosing neurological conditions and analyzing rain health from analysis of a biological fluid sample, such as a saliva sample, that looks for and determines the significance of peripheral markers of blood-brain barrier disruption. The present invention relates generally to a peripheral marker or markers of blood barrier integrity and methods of using same in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of a variety of diseases. Each of the plurality of hollow fibers has an interior defining an intracapillary space and the interior chamber defines an extracapillary space unoccupied by the plurality of hollow fibers. To access the extracapillary space of the device, a portion of the housing is removable. The device can be used to conduct permeability, drug efficacy, and gene expression studies.
