Phthalocyanine dyes of general formula (II) and, in particular, of general formula (III) wherein R-R, R-R, Me, M, m, n, o and p are as described in the specification, are excellent photosensitizers for the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions for photodynamic therapy or photo diagnostics.
