Techniques for providing file system functionality over a PCIe interface are disclosed. In some embodiments, the techniques may be realized as a method for providing file system functionality over a PCIe interface including receiving from a host device a storage command, specially devised for such a standard protocol, at a PCIe-based device controller, parsing, using at least one computer processor of the PCIe-based device controller, the storage command, traversing, using PCIe-based device controller, one or more portions of file system metadata of an associated storage media device, wherein the PCIe-based device controller is configured to traverse the one or more portions of file system metadata based on the parsed storage command independent of any subsequent communication with the host device, and returning data to the host device.

System and method to provide file system functionality over a PCIe interface

Systems, methods, and firmware for power control of data storage devices are provided herein. In one example, a data storage device is presented. The data storage device includes a storage control system to identify a power threshold for the data storage device. The data storage device determines power consumption characteristics for the data storage device and enters into a power controlled mode for the data storage device that adjusts at least a storage transaction queue depth in the data storage device to establish the power consumption characteristics as below the power threshold for the data storage device.

Performance-aware power capping control of data storage devices

Described herein are systems, methods, and software to manage metadata in a data storage device. In one example, a data storage device includes a first storage zone, a shingled magnetic recording (SMR) zone, and a storage control system. The storage control system is configured to maintain metadata in a metadata location of the first storage zone for user data in the SMR zone. The storage control system is further configured to, responsive to a usage condition being satisfied for the metadata in the metadata location, identify metadata locations in the SMR zone to redirect and store the metadata. The storage control system is also configured to maintain an indirection data structure in the metadata location of the first zone that correlates the metadata locations in the SMR zone to the metadata.

Data storage devices with performance-aware power capping

A shingled magnetic recording (SMR) disk drive has concentric shingled data tracks having data sectors with physical block addresses (PBAs), with the tracks being arranged in annular bands separated by annular inter-band gaps. The disk drive also has an on-disk extended cache region and may have writable inter-band cache (IBC) tracks in the inter-band gaps. A count is maintained in memory for each band and each IBC, and the count is incremented for each writing to a band or an IBC. When a count for a band or IBC reaches a predetermined threshold, the data is read from the tracks in the boundary region of the adjacent band that are within the range of the FTE and that data is then written to the extended cache. The FTE-affected tracks are then invalidated, meaning that PBAs can no longer be assigned to the data sectors in those tracks.
