A disk drive is disclosed having a plurality of disk surfaces, wherein each disk surface comprises a plurality of data tracks, and each data track comprises a plurality of data sectors. When a read command is received from a host, data is read from first and second data sectors on first and second disk surfaces, respectively, in response to the read command, wherein the first data sector stores data at a first data rate, and the second data sector stores data at a second data rate substantially less than the first data rate. The data is transferred to the host at a substantially constant average transfer rate. In this manner, the disk drive does not appear abnormal to a benchmark program that reads a plurality of data sectors across multiple disk surfaces.

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk having a plurality of tracks, wherein each track comprises a plurality of data sectors. The disk drive further comprises a plurality of heads, such as a top head and a bottom head. Control circuitry within the disk drive determines a head-switch preheat period used to format the disk. The head-switch preheat period is calibrated by selecting one of the heads to write a test pattern to the disk, and then preheating the selected head for a preheat period prior to reading the test pattern from the disk to generate a read signal. The head-switch preheat period is determined for the selected head in response to the read signal.

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk having a plurality of data tracks, wherein each data track comprises a plurality of data sectors, and a head is actuated over the disk. A suspect sector list (SSL) stores a plurality of SSL entries, wherein each SSL entry identifies at least one suspect data sector. The disk drive further comprises a disk controller for executing an access command received from a host computer to access at least one of the data sectors. If an error is detected while executing the access command, the disk controller generates an SSL entry having a priority level selected from at least three priority levels and adds the SSL entry to the SSL. A verification operation is executed for each suspect data sector identified by each SSL entry, wherein the SSL entries are processed relative to the priority level assigned to each SSL entry.

Disclosed is a self-heating disk drive that comprises a voice coil motor (VCM), a spindle motor, and a temperature sensor. The VCM includes a VCM coil and the VCM is configured to move an actuator having a head attached to a distal end of the actuator. The spindle motor includes a plurality of spindle coils to spin a disk of the disk drive. The temperature sensor is used to read an internal temperature of the disk drive. Circuitry is configured to: command the application of current to the VCM coil without loading the head onto the disk and to the spindle coils of the spindle motor in a manner so as not to spin the disk; and, if the internal temperature reading reaches a pre-determined spindle temperature, the spindle motor is allowed to spin-up the disk.

Self-heating disk drive

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk having a plurality of tracks, and a head actuated over the disk. Control circuitry heats the head in order to reduce a fly-height of the head, and computes a target servo sector to begin a preheat period. The control circuitry decreases the heat so that the fly-height is increased during at least part of a seek operation to seek the head from a first track to a second track. When the head reaches the target servo sector, the control circuitry increases the heat to decrease the fly-height during the preheat period.

A storage peripheral, such as disk drive, having a robust PCB connector configured in accordance with a SATA standard. The disk drive has a disk, a disk controller system, and a PCB for mounting the disk controller system, and a housing attached to the PCB. A first electrical contact arrangement in accordance with a SATA standard is connected to the PCB and is supported by a first blade connector. Both the first blade connector and the first electrical contact arrangement are enclosed by the housing. The housing further defines a cable connector receiving area around the first blade connector for the receipt of a cable connector. A pair of laterally-opposed guide arm receiving cavities are integrally formed with the housing and are disposed outside of the cable connector receiving area. The guide arm receiving cavities are adapted for the receipt of guide arms from a mating cable connector.

Storage peripheral having a robust serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) PCB connector

A band of data storage tracks adjacent to an initial OD (outer diameter) limit are analyzed to determine a track defect density based on flagged tracks within the band. If the defect density exceeds a predetermined threshold, them the disk drive is reconfigured by adjusting initial OD and ID (inner diameter) limits to exclude the analyzed band and to maintain a targeted storage capacity. Adjusting the initial OD and ID limits improves the disk drive's seek performance which would otherwise be disproportionately impacted by the defect density in the analyzed band.

Disclosed is a disk drive cover that provides improved disk shrouding and heat dissipation. Part of the cover is recessed relative to the rest and may be substantially circular. The recessed portion may be located approximately adjacent to at least one disk and may be substantially coextensive with at least one disk. Further, the internal side of the recessed portion may be at a vertical depth sufficient enough to shroud at least one disk. Additionally, the recessed portion may further include at least a member that projects from the external side of the recessed portion, such as approximately arcuate-shaped members or approximately rectangular-shaped members, to aid in heat dissipation.

A printed circuit board (PCB) connector configured in accordance with a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) standard. The PCB connector is for connection to a PCB. The PCB connector includes a first blade connector for supporting a first electrical contact arrangement in accordance with a SATA standard, a housing for supporting the first blade connector and the first electrical contact arrangement, and a pair of laterally-opposed guide arm receiving cavities being integrally formed with the housing. The housing defines a cable connector receiving area around the first blade connector for receipt of a cable connector. Further, the guide arm receiving cavities are disposed outside of the cable connector receiving area and are adapted for the receipt of guide arms from a mating cable connector.

The cable connector includes a first electrical contact arrangement in accordance with a SATA standard and is configured to mate with a first blade connector having a second electrical contact arrangement also in accordance with the SATA standard. The cable connector includes a first blade-receiving portion for enclosing the first electrical contact arrangement, a housing for supporting the first blade-receiving portion and the first electrical contact arrangement, and a pair of laterally-opposed guide arms being integrally formed with the housing. The housing has a cable entrance end and a mating end. The guide arms project from the mating end of the housing and are disposed outside of the first blade-receiving portion.

Robust serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) cable connector

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a spindle motor for rotating the disk, an actuator arm, and a head coupled to the actuator arm. While powered down the head is latched in a parked position. During a start-up process, the spindle motor is controlled to rotate the disk toward an operating speed and the head is unlatched prior to the disk reaching the operating speed. If the disk drive is in a first spin-up mode (e.g., a normal spin-up mode) the head is unlatched relative to a first target speed, and if the disk drive is in a second spin-up mode (e.g., a re-sync spin-up mode) the head is unlatched relative to a second target speed greater than the first target speed.

A disk drive having a connection-blocking device for use with a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) power receptacle. The disk drive has a moveable head for writing and reading to and from a disk, a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) for controlling operations in the disk drive, a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) section attached to the PCBA having a SATA power receptacle and a SATA data receptacle, a legacy Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) power receptacle attached to the PCBA, and a connection-blocking device. The legacy IDE power receptacle is electrically common with the SATA power receptacle. The connection-blocking device is attachable to either one of the SATA power receptacle or the legacy IDE power receptacle, respectively, to prevent redundant power connections within the disk drive.

The external SATA compatible disk drive further includes a SATA compatible cable having a disk drive end that is coupled to the SATA device connector of the disk drive and a host end for coupling to the host, wherein the SATA compatible cable is capable of delivering power signals to the external SATA compatible disk drive from the host. Also, the external SATA compatible disk drive includes a shield surrounding the SATA compatible cable that is coupled to the enclosure of the disk drive.
