A method and apparatus for supporting on-demand connectivity for network applications is disclosed. Specifically, the present invention discloses a method and apparatus for remotely triggering a connection from a first device to a network. Additionally, a method and apparatus for coordinating application connections is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of establishing application connections on-demand and managing the application connections.

A speech system includes a speech encoding system and a speech decoding system. The speech encoding system includes a speech analyzer for identifying each of the speech segments (i.e., phonemes) in the received digitized speech signal. A pitch detector, a duration detector, and an amplitude detector are each coupled to the memory and the analyzer and detect various prosodic parameters of each received speech segment. A speech encoder generates a data signal that includes the speech segment IDs and the values of the corresponding prosodic parameters. The speech decoding system includes a digital data decoder and a speech synthesizer for generating a speech signal based on the segment IDs and prosodic parameter values.

A speech encoding system for encoding a digitized speech signal into a standard digital format, such as MIDI. The MIDI speech encoding system includes a memory storing a dictionary comprising a digitized pattern and a corresponding segment ID for each of a plurality of speech segments (i.e., phonemes). A speech analyzer identifies each of the segments in the digitized speech signal based on the dictionary. One or more prosodic parameter detectors measure values of the prosodic parameters of each received digitized speech segment. A MIDI speech encoder converts the segment IDs and the corresponding measured prosodic parameter values into a MIDI speech signal. A MIDI speech decoding system includes a MIDI data decoder and a speech synthesizer for converting the MIDI speech signal to a digitized speech signal.

A method and apparatus for simplifying active window selection and shared command execution in a computer system generates a menu corresponding to a first application of a plurality of applications which can be executed concurrently in the computer system. The menu identifies a subset of the plurality of applications whose corresponding windows can be made currently active. Additionally, one or more of the subset of applications is installed but is not executing at the computer system. A selection identifying one of the subset of applications is then received, and a window corresponding to the identified one of the subset of applications is made the currently active window. In one embodiment, the menu also includes a set of shared commands which can be executed in the computer system. These shared commands perform the same function for each application of the subset of applications. In this embodiment, upon selection of one of the shared commands from the menu, the selected command is executed.

Methods and apparatus for task based application sharing in a graphic user interface such as for Windows.RTM. are provided. A host user designates an application to be shared, referred to as a shared application. Another user at a remote location, referred to as the client user, shares control of the shared application. The shared application runs and executes only on the host system. The client system has a rectangular area on the display screen within which all shared applications are displayed. The client system renders an image of all windows of a shared application including pop-up dialogs and Menus without also displaying unshared applications. Further, both the client and the host users continue to perform normal operations outside of the shared rectangular area, and the host user defines the tasks which are to be shared.
