A method of operating a vapor recovery system that recovers vapors expelled from a vehicle during refueling at a fuel dispensing point and returns the vapors to an underground storage tank through a vapor flow path that is in fluid communication with an air to liquid regulator valve and a vapor pump. The method includes dispensing fuel into the vehicle through the fuel dispensing point, regulating an amount of vapor that is recovered through the fuel dispensing point with the air to liquid regulator valve in proportion to the fuel dispensed into the vehicle, detecting a parameter of the vapor recovery system, and maintaining a substantially constant pressure level in a first portion of the vapor return path that is disposed between the vapor pump and the air to liquid regulator valve.

A ball and socket housing incorporating a thick housing wall of deformable material adjacent a central bore opening to provide a closure system utilizing a deformable cover-plate. The deformable cover-plate is formed to a desired configuration within the central bore to achieve a consistent internal socket preload. The cover-plate is deformed into the housing opening beyond an elastic limit to control resiliency or spring-back characteristics, thereby achieving a high-degree of repeatability and precise control of the ball and socket preload during the assembly process. The deformed cover-plate is retained in the socket housing at the cover-plate seat by swaged or rolling the perimeter of the housing to capture the perimeter of the deformed cover plate within the housing central bore opening.

A pivot socket of the present invention incorporates a stud shaft component having a tapered head portion disposed within a housing cavity, and an axial pin extension extending upward into the cavity therefrom. The tapered head portion seats against a tapered bearing surface disposed within the housing cavity, and the axial pin extension is enclosed within a resilient bushing. During use, lateral and axial loads imparted on the stud shaft are transformed into radial and axial component forces at the bearing surfaces. Angulation loads are resisted by the tapered head portion, and converted to axial forces. The radial force components are distributed to the interior walls of the housing cavity, while the axial force components are transferred axially through the resilient bushing to the end closure components secured to the housing, or directly to the housing through the tapered bearing surface. Little or no lateral force components are transferred to the resilient bushing from lateral loads imparted on the stud shaft, thereby reducing wear on the pivot socket components and extending the useful life thereof.
