A computing device may receive a first packet addressed to a destination node. The device may check a packet counter to determine if the counter exceeds a threshold, the counter recording a number of packets addressed to the destination node that have been received during a first time period. The device may in response to the packet counter exceeding the threshold: send, by the computing device, a query to an intermediate node; generate, by the device, a query flag in response to sending the query. The query flag can indicate that a query has been sent to the intermediate node. A reply from the intermediate node can be received by the device. The reply can identify a set of processes that the intermediate node is configured to perform on the first packet. The set of processes can be applied by the device to the first packet.

Routing high volume packet streams in a virtual network

Operations include determining billing for data being transmitted out of an Autonomous System (AS). An internal node in the AS determines billing for a packet transmitted out of the AS based at least on an egress path of the packet. The packet is received at the internal node in the AS The internal node selects an egress path of the packet based on one or more characteristics of the packet. The egress path is mapped directly or indirectly to a billing counter. The billing counter is incremented based on (a) the transmission of the packet on the overlay network to the egress gateway and (b) transmission of the packet out of the AS on the selected egress path.

Overlay network billing

Operations include determining billing for data being transmitted out of an Autonomous System (AS). An internal node in the AS determines billing for a packet transmitted out of the AS based at least on an egress path of the packet. The packet is received at the internal node in the AS via a particular overlay network of a plurality of overlay networks. Each overlay network may be associated with a corresponding tenant of a set of tenants. The internal node selects an egress path of the packet based on one or more characteristics of the packet. The egress path and the overlay network are mapped directly or indirectly to a billing counter. The billing counter is incremented based on (a) the transmission of the packet on the overlay network to the egress gateway and (b) transmission of the packet out of the AS on the selected egress path.

Systems and methods are described for creating and managing Global Session Identifiers (GSIDs) for communication sessions. GSIDs provide a way to globally identify communication sessions including those communication sessions that have experienced one or more topology changes. The GSID may be considered a header itself or a value within a header and information contained within a GSID can be used to trace backwards through time to find the session segments that led up to (or exist concurrently to) a currently signaled session.
