A fluid filtering device is provided for use with a fluid reservoir. The filtering device comprises a housing having an elongated tubular and cylindrical part defining an interior chamber. A fluid port is formed at one end of the housing and the port is open to the chamber. The housing is secured within the reservoir so that the housing is submerged below the reservoir fluid level. A fluid passageway is formed through the housing to establish fluid communication between the fluid in the reservoir and the housing chamber. An elongated guide member is also secured to the upper end of the tubular housing part so that the guide member extends upwardly from the housing. A filter assembly comprising a tubular filter element and a coaxial elongated extension is manually insertable over both the guide member and the tubular housing part whereupon the filter element is fluidly positioned between the housing chamber and the fluid in the reservoir.

Fluid filtering device

A fluid filtering device is provided for use with a fluid system having a fluid reservoir at least partially filled with fluid. The filter device comprises a housing which is submerged within the reservoir and has a fluid port. An elongated filter assembly comprising a tubular filter element open at one end and a holder assembly secured to the other end of the filter element is insertable into the reservoir so that the open end of the filter element sealingly engages the submerged housing. A fluid passage through the housing fluidly connects the fluid port with the interior of the filter element. A stopper is formed on the free end of the holder assembly so that the entire filter assembly can be inverted and reinserted into the reservoir whereupon the stopper prevents fluid flow through the fluid passage permitting the servicing of other system downstream of the filter assembly without it being necessary to drain the reservoir.

A fluid filtering device comprising a housing having an axis and defining an interior chamber. In one preferred embodiment a fluid inlet port is formed at one end of the housing which is open to the chamber while a fluid outlet port is formed on one side and is also open to the chamber. A filter element is positioned within the chamber between the inlet port and the outlet port. A first air bleed conduit within the housing has one end positioned within the outlet port and its other end positioned at the upper portion of the chamber when the housing is substantially vertically oriented. A second air bleed conduit within the housing also has one end within the outlet port and three openings at its other end. One of these three openings is at the uppermost portion of the chamber when the housing is in a corresponding one of three substantially horizontal positions. In a further form of the invention fluid passageways extend directly from a fluid outlet port formed at one end of the housing and one end of an annular inlet chamber surrounding the filter element.

Filter device with air bleed

A fluid filtering device is provided which is particularly suitable for connection with the suction line of a hydraulic pump. The fluid filtering device comprises an elongated tubular cylindrical housing open at each end and which has at least its lower end submerged in a reservoir of the fluid to be filtered. An elongated filter assembly includes an extension tube and tubular cylindrical filter element detachably coaxially connected at one end to the extension tube. The filter assembly is axially insertable into the housing so that the filter element is positioned below the fluid level of the reservoir. Upon insertion, both axial ends of the filter element sealingly engage the interior walls of the housing while the filter element is spaced radially inwardly from the housing and thus forming an annular outlet chamber. Fluid flows from the bottom housing, through the filter element, to the annular chamber and out through a fluid connector open to the annular chamber. Preferably, a differential pressure responsive bypass valve is fluidly connected between the annular chamber and the reservoir wherein said bypass valve opens upon a predetermined differential pressure across the filter element.

A head assembly for a spin-off filter is provided and comprises a stamped housing having a closed top wall and an open bottom with a flange adapted to sealingly engage the spin-off filter. A tube extends through the housing and is secured to the housing by appropriate means, such as welding. A member is thereafter secured to the tube for detachable connection with the spin-off filter. The tube also includes fluid passage means formed therein so that one end of the tube forms a fluid outlet while the other end of the tube forms a fluid inlet for connection with a fluid system. Fluid flow into the fluid inlet is diverted by the fluid passage means through the spin-off filter and to the fluid outlet.

Spin-off filter head assembly

A fluid filtering device is provided for connection with a fluid line. The fluid device includes a housing having a fluid inlet on one end, a fluid outlet on the other end and a fluid passage formed through the housing. The fluid passage connects the inlet with the outlet and includes a port formed along its length. A tubular filter element open at one end is removably insertable into a filter chamber formed within the housing and, upon insertion, is axially slidable between a first position in which the open end of the filter element abuts against the fluid port and a second position in which the open end of the filter element is spaced from the fluid port. A spring urges the filter element toward its first position. In operation the fluid flow into the housing inlet passes through the port and into the interior of the filter element. The fluid then flows through the filter element and to the housing outlet. When the filter element becomes clogged, the resulting increase in differential pressure across the filter element forces the filter element to or towards its second or retracted position which enables direct fluid flow from the inlet and to the outlet while bypassing the filter element. In addition, a filter member is secured across the other axial end of the filter element to permit fluid flow axially through the interior of the filter element, through the filter member and to the fluid outlet. When the filtering device is used as a suction line filter, a bleed is provided through the housing and open to the outlet side of the filter member to prevent air accumulation.

A unique relief valve is provided for use with a fluid system and comprises a reducing bushing having a throughbore. The bushing is externally threaded for connection with a standard fluid connector and, similarly, is internally threaded around its throughbore for connection to a further fluid connector in the fluid system. A valve seat having a fluid passageway is secured to the bushing while a valve member cooperates with the valve seat and is movable between open positions and a closed position. In its closed position, the valve member closes the fluid passageway on the valve seat and thus prevents fluid flow through the reducing bushing while, conversely, with the valve member in its open positions, fluid communication is established through the reducing bushing throughbore. A helical spring abuts against the valve member at one end and, at its other end, against a spring seat and urges the valve member towards its closed position. The spring seat, moreover, is adjustable to thereby vary the compression of the spring and thus the pressure setting for the relief valve.

Relief valve

A novel relief valve is provided for connection with a fluid system. The relief valve includes an elongated housing having an inlet and an outlet with a fluid passage connecting the inlet to the outlet. Preferably, the housing is constructed of a number of conventional and readily available pipe fittings. A relief valve assembly is disposed within the fluid passageway and comprises a perforated tube with a valve seat positioned at one axial end of the tube and adjacent the housing inlet. A valve member is also disposed within the perforated tube and is urged against the valve seat by a helical spring to normally prevent fluid flow through the relief valve. A stop pin is disposed through substantially diametrically opposed apertures in the perforated tube at a position spaced from the valve seat which acts as a stop for the end of the helical spring opposite from the valve member. The axial length, and thus the compression, of the spring can be varied by changing the axial position of the stop pin which accordingly varies the fluid pressure at the housing inlet necessary to open the valve assembly and to permit fluid flow through the relief valve.

A fluid filtering device is provided for connection with a fluid line. The fluid device includes a housing having a fluid inlet on one end, a fluid outlet on the other end and a fluid passage formed through the housing. The fluid passage connects the inlet with the outlet and includes a port formed along its length. A tubular filter element open at one end is removably insertable into a filter chamber formed within the housing and, upon insertion, is axially slidable between a first position in which the open end of the filter element abuts against the fluid port and a second position in which the open end of the filter element is spaced from the fluid port. A spring urges the filter element toward its first position. In operation the fluid flow into the housing inlet passes through the port and into the interior of the filter element. The fluid then flows through the filter element and to the housing outlet. When the filter element becomes clogged, the resulting increase in differential pressure across the filter element forces the filter element to or towards its second or retracted position which enables direct fluid flow from the inlet and to the outlet while bypassing the filter element.

A fluid filtering device is provided for connection with a fluid line. The fluid device includes a housing having a fluid inlet on one end, a fluid outlet on the other end and a fluid passage for connecting the inlet to the outlet. The fluid passage includes an elongated cylindrical wall portion along its length. A filter assembly comprising a tubular filter element open at each end and a cap attached to a first axial end of the filter element is insertable within the housing so that the other or second end of the filter element is received within and sealingly engages the cylindrical wall portion of the fluid passage when the cap is connected to the housing. With the filter assembly thus positioned, the outer periphery or exterior of the tubular filter element is open to the housing inlet while, conversely, the interior of the filter element is open to the housing fluid outlet. The filter element furthermore is axially slidably mounted between a first and second position with respect to the cap while a helical spring urges the filter element towards its first position. In the first position, the first axial end of the filter element sealingly abuts against the cap. Conversely, as the differential pressure across the filter element increases, the filter element moves outwardly from the cap and towards its second position and uncovers fluid bypass ports through the cap. The bypass ports enable direct fluid flow from the housing inlet and to the outlet while bypassing the filter element.

A fluid filtering device is provided which is particularly suitable for connection with the return or pressure line of a hydraulic system. The fluid filtering device comprises an elongated tubular cylindrical housing open at each end and which has at least its lower end submerged in a fluid reservoir. An elongated filter assembly includes an extension tube and a tubular cylindrical filter element coaxially connected at one end to the extension tube. The filter assembly is axially insertable into the housing so that the filter element is positioned at least partially below the fluid level of the reservoir. Upon insertion, both axial ends of the filter element sealingly engage the interior walls of the housing while the filter element is spaced radially inwardly from the housing thus forming an annular inlet chamber. Fluid flows from the inlet and into the annular chamber, through the filter element and to the reservoir through the open lower end of the filter element. An elongated tube is disposed within the interior of the filter element and has one end open to the bottom of the extension tube and its other end open adjacent the lower open end of the filter element. Upon removal of the filter assembly, leakage oil contained within the interior of the extension tube is siphoned through the tube and into the fluid reservoir.
