A popcorn popping machine which pops popcorn in batches/cycles. A sensor on a popcorn popping machine senses pops of popcorn in the kettle. A system computer controller monitors the rate of popping sensed by the sensor and uses the beginning of the decline in the rate of popping as a basis for controlling heat to the kettle during a given cycle/batch. Activation of the dump mechanism, which terminates the popping cycle/batch, is initiated when the computer controller detects a predetermined programmed minimum pop count rate after the heat has been turned OFF.

Popcorn popper

A method of popping popcorn in batches/cycles. A sensor on a popcorn popping machine senses pops of popcorn in the kettle. A system computer controller monitors the rate of popping sensed by the sensor and uses the beginning of the decline in the rate of popping as a basis for controlling heat to the kettle during a given cycle/batch. A product delivery system and method are provided including an electromechanical vibratory conveyor which has a product conveying member, a vibrator for vibrating the product conveyor and a control system for controlling electronically the vibration of the product conveying member both statically and dynamically to optimize performance both with and without product on the product conveying member. The vibration of the product conveying member is tuned both statically and dynamically with a coarse tuning followed by a fine tuning. An improved pulse width modulation drive circuit for the vibrator includes vibrating frequency and amplitude varying devices for adjusting the frequency and amplitude of the vibrator for increased efficiency, optimized performance and reduction in energy consumption. Several redundant safety devices to safeguard the switching devices and the vibrator are also provided.

Self tuning vibratory control means

A method and apparatus for settling product in a servo-controlled vertical form, fill and seal machine where the product, when inserted into a partially-formed tubular bag, normally does not adequately settle without further action by the machine. The invention utilizes motion control of a servo motor to provide a settling action for product inside the partially-formed bag to introduce instability to cause settling in the bag at a very high frequency during continuous motion of the film and the film tube.

Method and apparatus for settling product in a servo-controlled continuous pull system

A method and apparatus for a vertical form, fill and seal machine to produce a constant pull length of the film and therefore packages of consistent length, whatever the velocity of the machine. When the film is pulled, and the pulling ceases, there is always a finite overrun of pulled film. The method according to the invention determines the velocity for operation of the machine while accounting for the overrun in order to produce packages of constant length. The apparatus includes a motion controller for calculating the velocity and operating the machine at the calculated velocity during the time that the film is being advanced in the vertical form, fill and seal machine.

Vertical form, fill and seal machine having constant film pull length

A controller for detecting abnormal operating conditions of a continuous motion machine such as a packaging machine. The acceleration and velocity of motors for the various axes of the machine are examined by the controller and rapid deceleration or a more gradual deceleration to a lower velocity relative to a machine velocity are employed for stopping the machine when overloads in the form of jams or mechanical faults occur in moving parts of the machine. By using this system, machine overloads can be detected much earlier than by using conventional techniques, and as a result, damage resulting from overloads and nuisance tripping can be eliminated or greatly reduced.

Overload detector for servo driven machines

A method and apparatus of maintaining tension in the film over the forming shoulder in the forward and reverse directions of a package formed in a vertical form, fill and seal machine and stripping and/or settling products out of the sealing and severing area of a partially formed package. The machine includes a source of film, a measuring axis, a forming shoulder, a pull axis, and a finishing system for stripping, sealing and severing successive packages from a formed tube. The measuring axis and the pull axis are operated in the forward direction to form a film tube while tension is maintained on the tube. After a predetermined length of tubing has been pulled, the measuring axis is operated in the reverse direction while the tube is retained in tension downstream of the forming shoulder. Stripping of product entrained in the film seal area can occur in the reverse direction. Product can also be settled in the tube by alternately operating in the forward and reverse directions, or by operating in a stepwise fashion in the forward direction as product as injected into the tube.

Method of handling film on a vertical form, fill and seal machine

In a continuous motion hot air sealer the amount of heat applied to the area of film to be sealed is varied in accordance with the velocity of the film by programming the hot air generator in a straight line relationship between sealing temperature and film velocity as determined from data on high speed temperature and low speed temperature which will produce good heat seals.

Continuous motion heat seal control

An apparatus for enveloping successive groups of items in a plastic film as the items traverse a linear path. Items are gathered in a group, and the group of items is then inserted in a tubular packaging film as the items and the film are conveyed at the same linear velocity. After the items are completely enveloped in the film, the film is severed and sealed to fully encapsulate them in the film. A vacuum is used to eliminate excess air generated within the tube, and also, in one form of the invention, form side gussets as sealing dies are closed. A tight package made at speeds results, with no need for any holes in the film to relieve internal air pressure.

Method and apparatus for packaging groups of items in an enveloping film

A vertical form-fill-seal packaging machine controlled by a controller for receiving input data defining the package length, cycle time and sealing time and for controlling the feed of the packaging material as a function of the input data, the machine having a measuring roll for feeding the material forward in package length increments which is also operable to maintain the material tracking properly, further having a control maintaining the material under substantially constant tension, rapid controllable sealing jaw operation, a readily retractable longitudinal seam sealer, and a stripper operable independently of the sealing jaws.

Form-fill-seal packaging apparatus

A system for monitoring carbon monoxide (CO) levels produced by the operation of a vehicle's engine. The system includes a detector in the vehicle's passenger compartment for detecting the concentration of CO inside the compartment and circuitry for generating a HIGH CO signal when the detected concentration of CO inside the compartment is greater than a predetermined level. The system disables the operation of the engine in response to the HIGH CO signal. The system also senses a status condition of the vehicle and inhibits the disabling of the engine when the status condition is sensed.

Collator apparatus and methods for preventing incorrect operations of first and second machines such as a combination scale and a packaging machine which are to be used together to process the same type of product. The first machine has a first memory for storing operation condition data, each with a different data number (address), and has an associated first memory control. The second machine has a second memory for storing other operation condition data, each with a different data number, and an associated second memory control. The first memory control of the first machine is caused to generate a specified one of the data numbers of the first memory. The collator apparatus sends a request signal to the second memory control of the second machine to cause the second memory control to generate a data number of the second memory, which data number corresponds to the specified one by a predetermined relationship in the absence or malfunction. Then the data numbers so generated are compared and a starting signal is produced for the first machine when the data numbers correspond according to the predetermined relationship. The predetermined relationship, for example, can be a match, or a correspondence of data numbers in a table, or otherwise.

Operation condition collator and methods

A control system and method for an apparatus for sealing packages wherein a web of flexible packaging material having a series of registration marks is formed into tubing and fed past a sealing device for sealing the tubing to form packages. As the tubing is fed past the sealing device, a photoeye detects the registration marks. A CPU, responsive to the photoeye, compares the location of registration marks relative to a window. A counter, responsive to the CPU, sets a delay length of tubing to be fed past the sealing device in response to the relative location of the registration marks and the window. The feeding of the tubing is stopped after the counter has been decremented to zero and the delay length of tubing has passed the sealing device. An in registration delay length of tubing to be fed past the sealing device is set in response to detection by said photoeye of a registration mark within the window. An out of registration delay length to be fed past the sealing device is set in response to failure of the photoeye to detect a registration mark within the window. The feeding of the tubing is stopped after the in registration delay length of tubing has passed the sealing device to allow sealing of the tubing at that point. The feeding of the tubing is also stopped in response to failure by the photoeye to detect a registration mark during the period that the out of registration delay length is fed past the sealing device. The in registration delay length has a magnitude which is a function of the relative location.

Method of and apparatus for controlling a bag forming, filling and sealing machine by monitoring the machine cycle and controlling the jaw closure mechanism based on a previously determined jaw closed point. If the jaw closed indication is received prior to the previous value plus offset, the sealing cycle continues normally and all functions interlocked to jaw closed position such as knife, impulse, etc. are allowed to function normally. If the jaw closed signal is not received prior to the previous value plus offset the jaw close function is inhibited signifying a jam condition and the interlocked functions such as knife, impulse, etc. are inhibited. This function is independent of any external adjustment and serves as a safety device in all modes.

Method of and apparatus for forming, filling and sealing packages

Method and apparatus for controlling a machine which is operable in cycles, the machine carrying out a plurality of functions during each cycle. Values representing the stages of the machine in its cycle are generated as the machine progresses through a cycle, the values being determined by the actual stage of the machine independently of time. Starting and stopping points in the cycle for at least one of the functions of the machine is preset in terms of the generated values. The generated values are compared with the preset starting and stopping point values. The machine function is initiated and maintained when the generated values are greater than the preset starting point value but are less than the preset stopping point value and the function is stopped when the generated values equal or are greater than the preset stopping point value. Apparatus and method for computing starting and stopping points for an eyespot window using only a single set of delay switches is also disclosed.
