The disclosure is directed to a modular frame assembly for electrical and electronic components and a universal rail member used in its formation which permits fabrication of the assembly in various sizes and configurations. The rail member comprises an elongated web with longitudinal sides and edges. A pair of first ridge members project laterally outward from one side of the web and extend over its length in spaced, parallel relation. A pair of second ridge members project laterally outward from the opposite side of the web, also extending over its length in parallel, spaced relation. The second ridge members are spaced apart to engageably receive the first ridge members of another rail member in interlockable relation. At least one notch is formed in each of the second ridge members, the notches being transversely aligned, and sized and configured to receive the end of another rail member in perpendicular, interlocking relation.

The invention resides in utilizing a servo motor to drive the label feed and employing a control system for the servo motor which is responsive to the rate of feed or speed of the surface to be labelled as it is advanced to the labeller. The control system on receiving an instruct-to-label signal accelerates the servo motor smoothly from zero to the desired labelling speed while the surface to be labelled is advanced toward the labeller a predetermined distance and on receiving an end to labelling signal decelerates the servo motor smoothly from labelling speed to zero while the label feed is advanced a predetermined distance. The arrangement is such that upon an instruct to label signal being fed to the control system at a predetermined position of advance of the surface relative to the labeller the labeller will accelerate a label from a predetermined start position and deliver same to touch down on the surface to be labelled at the precise desired point with the label moving at the same speed as the surface and upon an end to labelling signal generated by a label feed sensor being fed to the control system the labeller will decelerate to bring the next label to be delivered to said predetermined start position in preparation for the next instruct-to-label signal.

Servo motor control labeller

In labelling apparatus for precision application of labels to continuously conveyed articles, labels are applied which have a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing releasably carried by a web. To provide precision in application, the leading portion of the label next to be applied is sensed and is separated from the web. A control device, on receiving a sensed label signal, determines the extent to which the leading portion of separated label extends from the web preparatory to article application. The control device resumes web movement to marry label speed with conveyed article speed in applying label to desired article location.

Label position sensor for labeller

Apparatus for applying at predetermined positions within a predetermined location on a carrier surface predetermined discrete pieces of indicia which in combination provide a predetermined indicia presentation particular to the carrier surface location as part of a scheme of marking like surface locations with indicia presentations which may vary from location to location; the apparatus comprising a plurality of indicia applying sources consisting of a source for each discrete piece of indicia to be called for by the scheme, means for feeding the carrier surface past each of the indicia applying sources so that each predetermined point within the predetermined location is presented for the application thereto of indicia from each source, and a control unit for controlling the indicia applying sources in response to input thereto of input control data for the predetermined surface location defining the discrete pieces of indicia and position thereof required therefor, the control unit operating to activate any of the sources which applies any discrete piece of indicia called for by the input control data respective such location to effect application of such indicia at any and all positions called for by such input control data. The apparatus is especially adapted for applying color coded labels and the indicia applying sources are labelling devices for applying such labels.
