This invention relates to the remote monitoring of the floating roofs of large storage tanks, including tanks used for storing liquid petroleum products or other chemicals. The invention is used to monitor the position and flexure of the roof and other conditions such as vibration; the presence of vapors or liquids from water, hydrocarbons, or other chemicals; the presence of snow; or the presence of intruders. The invention can be connected to a monitoring system using wired or wireless means and can be used for routine status monitoring or for notifying plant operators in the event of alarm conditions. The invention can be completely self-contained and is suitable for encapsulation and use in harsh environments.

Apparatus for the wireless remote monitoring of storage tank roofs

An apparatus for the wireless and remote monitoring of covered floating storage tanks monitors roof position, flexure, fires and the presence of vapors or liquids from water, hydrocarbons or other chemicals. The apparatus relies upon on one or more encapsulated intelligent sensor units and communication units. The sensors are deployed on the floating roof of a storage tank and the communication units are deployed near the top wall of the floating roof storage tank or on the fixed roof of the tank.

Apparatus for the wireless remote monitoring of covered floating storage tank roofs

A floating storage tank roof having a roof cover level monitor apparatus uses a flexible rod having a first end in contact with the storage tank cover bottom surface and a second end in contact with a base mounted to the top of the storage tank roof. As the rod flexes the second end of the rod is pushed into a slot within the base and against a resilient member within the slot. Within the slot are disposed proximity switches. As the rod second end sinks into the slot the proximity switches are actuated by mechanical or magnetic means. The spacing of the switches within the slot is calibrated to represent the level of the storage tank roof. A force transducer may also be used in lieu of the switches.

Apparatus for the monitoring of floating roof position for storage tank roofs

An audio system () is provided with improved adaptive filter () to automatically adjust signal gain depending on the ambient noise level. The original music signal passes through a normalized adaptive filter (), and is subtracted from the ambient room signal detected by a microphone (), resulting in an error signal that is an estimate of the ambient noise. The error signal is used to update a set of adaptation coefficients so that the normalized adaptive filter more accurately simulates the room transfer function, resulting in an better estimate of the ambient noise. The audio system () is calibrated automatically upon initial use to determine adaptation coefficients and noise threshold level to prevent runaway gain. System parameters are adjusted using a controller () with a user-friendly interface ().
