For a shaft seal for a pump, a barrier fluid flow and pressure control method, system, and apparatus providing a manifold having oppositely axially arranged flow and pressure control valves, the control valves having open-ended valve cylinders reciprocally adjustable within flow channels of the manifold, the valve cylinders having elongate flow orifices selectively positionable within the flow channel with said orifice in selective registry with a respective outlet. The extent of registry of the elongate orifice with the respective outlet controls the rate of flow through the valve. The pressure control valve sets the barrier fluid pressure while the flow control valve sets a minimum flow required for the barrier fluid operation.

Shaft seal coolant flow control

A flush fluid flow control apparatus having an adjustable flow control valve and a flow measuring orifice combined in a block assembly. The flow control orifice is formed in a tube having a plurality of radial orifices and which can be axially turned to register with the flow channel for selecting flow ranges measurable by the orifice selected. Differential pressure is read across the orifice and communicated to act on a double headed piston which moves through the block proportionally to the differential pressure, the double headed piston compressing air in a chamber to an extent proportional with its movement, and a pressure gauge is installed into the chamber to correlate the movement of the double headed piston with the actual flow rate.

Multirange adjustable flow control

A filtering system for a pump shaft seal includes a filter for preventing abrasive, fibrous, or other solid materials from entering the region of the stuffing box of the pump in the proximity of the seal. The filter is mounted on the pump shaft between the pump impeller and the seal, adjacent a recirculation flush port of the pump. A venturi draw is used to continuously draw fluid from between the filter and the seal and webs arranged on the rotating filter cause a localized back flushing of the filter to remove accumulated solid material from a front face of the filter.

Filtering system for pump shaft seals

A closed lubrication system for use in bearing housings subject to a range of temperatures which isolates the air and lubricant within the bearing housing from potential contamination arising from exposure to ambient air. The invention includes a liquid-displacement expansion chamber assembly which is responsive to temperature changes in the bearing housing to accommodate volumetric expansion and contraction of supply air. A constant level lubricator is provided to maintain the quantity of lubricant at a constant sump level. A lubricant circulation assembly, including a lubricant filter, a lubricant cooler, a lubricant pump, and a sight gauge is also provided. The lubricant circulation assembly and the constant level oiler may form part of the self-contained, integral unit adapted to be selectively connected to the bearing housing. The lubricant pump may be a gear pump. The liquid-displacement expansion chamber assembly includes first chamber open to supply air and isolated from contact with ambient air, and a second chamber open to ambient air, but isolated from contact with supply air. In one embodiment, the first chamber is disposed generally below the second chamber. In a second embodiment, the first chamber is disposed generally laterally of the second chamber.

Closed lubrication system for bearings

A pressurizable seal assembly provides a temporary seal which allows continued operation of a device, for example a pump, when the primary seal is removed for repair or replacement. The seal assembly includes a seal housing having a selectively pressurizable annular chamber with an open inner circumference surround the shaft of the device. An annular seal member is disposed in the annular chamber at the inner circumference thereof, and is actuable by pressure in the chamber to selectively sealingly engage the shaft. When the rotary shaft device has a single primary seal, the pressurizable seal may be provided between the stationary housing and the primary seal. When the primary seal of the rotary shaft device is a tandem seal, the pressurizable seal assembly may be disposed between the first and second primary seals of the tandem seal. The seal housing may be two-piece construction to facilitate its installation on and removal from the rotary shaft. In order to maintain the chamber at a predetermined pressure, a fitting may be provided which may be adapted to be attached to shop air pressure. In an alternative embodiment, an accumulator may be provided to maintain relatively constant chamber pressure. When the seal assembly is provided in combination with the tandem seal, the seal housing may include a receiving portion that forms a stationary sealing surface for one seal member of the tandem seal.

Pressure activated emergency/temporary seal

A seal assembly, for maintaining a seal condition between a housing and a rotary shaft extending from the housing, it accommodates a significant degree of non-orthogonal alignment between the housing and the shaft. The seal assembly includes a rotary seal member affixed to a rotary shaft, and a stationary member surrounding the shaft and including an internal bore having a contact surface. An annular, stationary floating member surrounds the shaft and is exposed in the internal bore. The floating member includes a surface in sealing engagement with the rotary seal member. An annular slip ring is disposed in the internal bore, and in contact with the floating member and the contact surface. The slip ring provides an articulated link between the floating member and the contact surface of the stationary member, by virtue of being radially displaceable along a rear surface of the floating member.

Omni-directional articulated mounting assembly for shaft seals

A device having a rotary shaft extending through a housing, with the device including a shaft seal for affecting a substantially fluid tight seal between the shaft and the housing, wherein the shaft seal includes: a rotating seal member secured to and rotatable with the shaft, a stationary seal member for affecting sealing contact with the rotating seal member, and wherein the rotating seal member is adjustably mounted on the shaft. The invention provides a single mechanism for both transversely positioning the rotating seal member with respect to the shaft, and moving the rotating seal member to a predetermined axial position along the shaft.

Adjustable shaft seal and method of adjustment

A shaft seal has a rotary seal and a stationary seal with predetermined axial and radial dimensions. The two seals are positioned, with respect to a shaft, so as to fix the axial and radial dimensions with respect to one another by way of a plastic strip which is positioned about the sleeve of the rotary with its edges engaging the rotary and the stationary seals and extends to the exterior thereof. A tab is provided at the end of the plastic strip and the strip is pulled from the seal after axial and radial fixation of the seal components and upon rotation of the shaft.

Shaft seal with predetermined mounting parameters

A positive bearing housing seal is provided in which the stationary, and possibly a reducer having the same peripheral shaped of the stationary, is employed for installing and aligning the stationary and the rotary with respect to the shaft. A flat surface of the stationary is moved against a flat surface of the rotary until the flat surface of the stationary engages a machine wall or, if a reducer is used, a flat surface of the reducer. The shaft is then rotated to establish squareness. The stationary is then removed from the shaft, reversed in the axial direction, and reinstalled such that a flexible extension thereof, including a peripheral bead, is inserted into engagement with the inner surface of an annular opening in the machine wall or an annular opening in the reducer.

Mechanical seal

A positive bearing housing seal is provided in which the stationary seal member, and possibly a reducer having the same peripheral shape of the stationary seal member, is employed for installing and aligning the stationary seal member and the rotary seal member with respect to the shaft. A flat surface of the stationary seal member is moved against a flat surface of the rotary seal member until the flat surface of the stationary seal member engages a machine wall or, if a reducer is used, a flat surface of the reducer. The shaft is then rotated to establish squareness. The stationary seal member is then removed from the shaft, reversed in the axial direction, and reinstalled such that a flexible extension thereof, including a peripheral bead, is inserted into engagement with the inner surface of an annular opening in the machine wall or an annular opening in the reducer.

Method of installing a positive bearing housing seal

A cyclic lubrication system is pulled by compressed air by way of a timer so that an injector manifold, having a plurality of injector valves, is fed with a lubricant which is gravity fed into the system during the off times of the cyclic air pulsation. Each of the injector valves is adjustable with respect to the quantity of lubricant delivered.

Pistonless air powered lubricating system

A shaft seal comprises a rotatable seal ring carrying an annular seal member for rotatably engaging a seal face of a seal member. The seal ring is mounted in a seal holder and is coupled for rotation with a hollow sleeve connected to the shaft by at least one drive pin extending radially inwardly from the seal holder and received in a longitudinal peripheral groove, in the hollow sleeve, terminated by an annular groove. The drive pin and the longitudinal groove have flat sides and the annular groove provides for milling of the longitudinal groove with a cylindrical tool without leaving arcuate terminating sides on the longitudinal groove and permits positioning of the seal interface as close as possible to the drive mechanism.

Shaft seal

A cartridge mount seal includes a unitary sleeve structure for telescopically receiving a seal ring adapter therein, the sleeve structure being sealed to a shaft and to the seal ring adapter. Automatic alignment of a stationary unit to the rotary unit is provided by way of an O-ring which slightly engages the outer surface of the sleeve during mounting of the stationary unit. The stationary unit includes a floating seal member for automatic alignment of the stationary and rotary seal faces. Distortion of the sleeve during clamping thereof to the shaft and centering of the sleeve are provided by a centering screw structure which radially sets the sleeve with respect to a reference surface on the stationary unit.
