A head up display system having a diffusing image plane or diffuser. The light output of a relatively small image source is imaged on the diffuser by way of imaging optics. A mirror is used to image light from the diffuser onto a windshield and correct for distortion caused by the windshield. The diffuser is advantageously used when a large field-of-view is desired, or sun load characteristics need to be addressed. The diffuser may be flat or curved in order to optimize the system for different applications. The magnification of the mirror may be made relatively low, and the solar energy density that is made incident on the image source is reduced, providing for a low cost, high performance, color head up display system.

Head up display system using a diffusing image plane

A bright bulb with a parabolic or elliptical reflector project light through a duct with internal reflective walls to a liquid crystal display having the same or smaller area than the reflector area. The duct tapers from a circular entrance aperture to a rectangular exit aperture and enhances brightness and uniformity. An IR mirror between the lamp and the duct reflects heat to the lamp. A holographic diffuser at the exit aperture further improves uniformity. The LCD polarizer is mounted on the diffuser and spaced from the liquid crystal cell by an intervening cooling air passage to minimize heating of the cell. The display is suitable for HUD applications.

Backlighting for bright liquid crystal display

A snap-action fastener suitable for joining two or more members using automated or manual assembly techniques. The fastener includes a pair of legs spaced apart and having complementary ends, with each of the legs being formed so as to be resilient in bending. Flexibly attached to the complementary ends of the legs are first and second arms, respectively. The arms are attached to the legs so as to form first and second hinges, respectively. The arms can be attached to the complementary ends at a midpoint or an end of each arm. Furthermore, the arms are flexibly attached to each other so as to form a third hinge intermediate the first and second hinges. To generate the desired snap-action, the combined lengths of the arms between the complementary ends of the legs is greater than the distance between the complementary ends, such that the snap-action occurs during operation of the fastener between a release position and a fastening position. The fastener further includes a coupling member which is specifically configured so as to be operatively associated with the arms. In particular, the coupling member is configured to secure a first member to a second member when the first member is interconnected with the legs and the fastener is in the fastening position. The above structure provides a bi-stable mechanism which is capable of variations for tailoring the fastener to a variety of applications.

An illuminated annunciator as in a gear selector has gear designation letters always lit and a ring around each letter selectively lit to indicate the active gear range. A generally conical light pipe with a conical central cavity has at one end an annular emitting surface adjacent the ring and at the other end it is illuminated by an LED. Another LED within the conical cavity illuminates the letter directly as well as via reflection from the wall of the cavity.

An airfoil having a device for changing the spacing between the airfoil's surface panels, thus to change the aerodynamic property of the airfoil. Considering the airfoil as in the case of the airfoil being a part of an airplane wing, the airfoil carries a flap panel along the wing's front edge, the flap panel being movably interconnected to the airfoil's lower panel, and is slidable along the airfoil's upper panel as the panel-spacing is changed, providing an effectively air-sealed relationship of the panels; and that controlled adjustability is provided by a control shaft which, by gearing of both upper panel's movable support means and of the flap panel support means, thus achieving their co-ordinated movement to change the airfoil shape.
