A valve and irrigator used with a suction tube has an elongate funnel with an axis through an enlarged entrance and an opposed extended exit duct of a flexible elastomer. A flow passage through the elongate funnel connects the entrance to the exit permitting fluid communication. A web across and near the enlarged entrance sealingly separates that from the exit. The web and the elongate funnel are made of silicone elastomer and are adhesively adhered to together. A portal in the web passes therethrough along the axis and is circular in shape to surround in fluid tight engagement the suction tube. A lid, proximally of the web on the enlarged entrance, has an inlet for irrigation and a pass through for the tube; the lid closes the enlarged entrance forming a chamber between the web and the lid. A slit within the web, near the portal and spaced from the axis is in the form of a closed mouth composed of a pair of sealing lips. Normally the pair of lips are together but are able to separate and define a passageway for fluid flow through the web. A peripheral bump is radially disposed relative to the slit and is located on the entrance in position to align flexure force therethrough and toward the axis. A method of using the valve and irrigator with the suction tube has steps including locating an elongate funnel along the axis with the entrance thereon. Positioning the exit on the elongate funnel opposite the entrance and along the axis is a step. Merging the exit with the entrance is step. A step is permitting fluid communication through the flow passage between the entrance and exit. Sealingly separating the entrance and exit with the web is a step. The step of passing the portal through the web along the axis so it surrounds tube therethrough. A method for making the valve and irrigator has steps of locating the web near the entrance, passing through the web the portal and slit.

Method and apparatus for a valve and irrigator

A surgical system has a multiple electrode electrosurgical capability in combination with a gas plasma capability for delivery of electrosurgical energy to the tissue or bodily fluids of a patient. The system includes a holder, a source of electrical energy, electrodes connected to the source of electrical energy, one or more passages carried on the holder for transporting ionizable gas, and a source of ionizable gas of a selectable flow rate. The gas passages may include at least one electrode extending toward the operative site. The gas passages may include a part that creates a vortex in the gas flow. The electrodes may be coaxially placed in the gas passages. The system may also be configured such that two electrodes are each shrouded by the ionized gas so that the electrosurgical energy is conducted to the tissue or bodily fluids of the operative site by passing along conductive pathways in the ionized gas from each electrode. There may also be a dielectric barrier between the conductive pathways. The system may also be configured such that one of the multiple electrodes is substantially in contact with the tissue or bodily fluids of the operative site and another of the multiple electrodes is in the circuit through the conductive pathway of the ionized gas flow so that electrosurgical energy is conducted through the tissue or bodily fluids of the operative site and between the electrodes. Methods of manufacture and use for the system are also claimed.

Plasma enhanced bipolar electrosurgical system

A surgical safety apparatus for use in connection with an energizable surgical device prevents inadvertent activation of a surgical tool. The energizable surgical device may include an electrosurgical system, a laser scalpel, an ultrasonic aspirator, and combinations thereof. An activation circuit is in connection with the source of energy and in connection with the handpiece. The activation circuit has two states: the first state disconnects the source of energy from the handpiece, the second state connects the source of energy to the handpiece. A sensing element is connected to the activation circuit. The sensing element signals the activation circuit to convert the activation circuit from the first state to the second state. The activation circuit may remain in the second state for a preestablished period of time followed by a reversion to the first state. The activation circuit may include a relay which may be connected to operate accessories including smoke evacuators, lights, videos or irrigators. The sensing element may be disposed to sense the proximity of the surgical tool to the surgical site. The sensing element may be disposed to sense a voice command. The sensing element can monitor the activations of an electrical switch associated with the surgical tool. If the sensing element detected a specified timed pattern of activations of the electrical switch, for example a double click, then the sensing element would signal the activation circuit to convert to the second state.

Energizable surgical tool safety device and method

An intravascular catheter, such as a balloon catheter, and a method for use thereof, the catheter comprising an elongate shaft having an inflation lumen extending therethrough, an implement, such as a dilation balloon, connected to and located at the distal portion of the shaft and communicating with the lumen, a small profile core wire extending through at least the dilation balloon and having a distal portion that extends distally from the dilation balloon through a distal core wire opening located distally of the balloon, and further in which the core wire is movable relative to the elongate shaft to allow withdrawal of the elongate shaft and the balloon while leaving the core wire positioned intravascularly, and a tip member connected to the core wire in a region thereof distal of the location at which the core wire extends distally of the core wire opening, the tip member having a profile larger than the opening. Also, a manifold is provided adapted to both form a fluid seal around a guide wire received in a port and spatially fix the position of the guide wire in the manifold. Also, the manifold automatically closes a fluid port upon disconnection of a source of fluid from the fluid port.

Intravascular catheter and method for use thereof

A temporary stent for supporting a region of a vessel in a body comprising a composite stent portion and an actuator portion and methods for the use and manufacture thereof. The composite stent portion is comprised of an elongate perfusable vessel supporting portion adapted to be configurable between a reduced size for placement in the vessel and removal therefrom and an expanded size for structurally supporting the vessel and perfusable end portions connected to and forming ends of the vessel supporting portion and adapted to allow fluid flow therethrough. The composite stent portion is comprised of a plurality of resilient metallic wires coated with a polymeric material to provide stability for both lifting and maintaining a vessel. A method is disclosed for deployment of the composite stent to maintain vessel patency during occurrence of an intimal flap, vasoconstriction or vasospasm.

Apparatus including a spiral coil body as a stent for temporarily supporting a body vessel internally, the spiral coil body being adjustable in diameter by relative rotation of at least one of the ends of the body from a proximal location.

Temporary stent

A temporary stent for supporting a region of a vessel in a body comprising a stent portion and an actuator portion and methods for the use and manufacture thereof. The stent portion is comprised of an elongate perfusable vessel supporting portion adapted to be configurable between a reduced size for placement in the vessel and removal therefrom and an expanded size for structurally supporting the vessel and perfusable end portions connected to and forming ends of the vessel supporting portion and adapted to allow fluid flow therethrough. The actuator portion includes a proximal end extending out of the body and a distal end connected to the stent portion and operable by manipulation at the proximal end thereof to configure the support portion into a reduced size and an expanded size.
