Methods are provided for determining a solids to liquids ratio in a flowing petroleum stream having an immiscible solids, oil and water flow. Microwave energy in the 10-12 Gigahertz bond is directed through the petroleum stream and attenuated transmitted and reflected microwave energy are detected. The detected microwave energy is compared to an empirically derived map of attenuated amplitude vs. phase for a set of reference petroleum streams having known solid, oil and water contents to derive a solids to liquids ratio for the unknown stream.

The invention is a method of restoring the permeability of an underground hydrocarbon formation adjacent to a wellbore which comprises injecting a first aqueous solution of hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid into a formation interval where permeability has decreased due to polymer plugging and producing that acid out of the well after a soaking period. A second solution of about 200 ppm to about 2% by weight of chlorine dioxide is injected into the same interval and followed by a third solution of hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid. The second and third solutions are allowed to soak in the formation for about 4 to about 48 hours before placing the well back on injection or production.

A microwave core monitor includes a sample cell which contains a test core of an earth formation. A microwave transmitter irradiates the test core with a beam of electromagnetic energy at a microwave frequency. The test core is cleaned and then subjected to a predetermined sequence of events similar to that which the reservoir has experienced. The test core is flooded with a chemical to be tested and the chemical is then driven from the test core with a drive liquid. The test core is irradiated with a beam of electromagnetic energy at a microwave frequency. An indication representative of the effectiveness of the chemical in the test core is derived in accordance with the electromagnetic energy that has passed through the test core.
