A shield is disposed about the electrode of a metal halide arc discharge lamp in order to improve lamp performance. The construction and location of the shield are such as to not lower the cold-spot temperature of the arc tube.

In a mercury-containing arc discharge device for converting electrical energy into resonance radiation, the isotopic distribution of the mercury in the device is altered from that of natural mercury so as to reduce imprisonment time of resonance radiation and thereby increase the efficiency of conversion of electrical energy into resonance radiation.

A metal halide arc discharge lamp comprises an arc tube having electrodes at its ends and containing a fill including mercury, a starting gas, elemental scandium and at least about 2.6.times.10.sup.-6 gram atoms of scandium halide and 3.0.times.10.sup.-5 gram atoms of sodium halide per centimeter of arc length.
