The present invention provides a system for achieving erythema and/or mild edema in an upper layer of skin, without causing blisters, and without the risk of high fluence levels or critical need for cooling.

Thermal quenching of tissue

A method and apparatus for treatment of skin or other tissue, using a source of thermal, electromagnetic radiation, electrical current, ultrasonic, mechanical or other type of energy, to cause minimally-invasive thermally-mediated effects in skin or other tissue which stimulates a wound-healing response, in conjunction with topical agents or other wound healing compositions, for application on the skin or other tissue which accelerate collagenesis, such as in response to wound healing. The dosage and time period of application of the compositions are adjusted to prevent external or surface tissue damage.

Enhanced noninvasive collagen remodeling

A method for selective heating of subsurface structures in material such as tissue includes a cooling device for thermally quenching or removing heat from the top surface of tissue during or just after delivering pulsed energy to target or subsurface structures or tissue, a preferred embodiment of the invention using dynamic cooling, to quench the thermal energy conducted from the targeted structure into surrounding tissue.

A method and system of delivering energy to material in which energy is converted to thermal energy in the material, and prior to significant therapeutic or other physiological change in a selected or target region of the material, results in a temperature rise which is maximum in a selected region of the material but which is insufficient to cause significant therapeutic or other physiological effect, the system for selective preheating of subsurface target regions of material such as human tissue including an energy source to preheat the material or tissue, a passive or active cooling means, and a device for delivering therapeutic or treatment energy, such as pulsed, electromagnetic, laser or non-coherent energy, to tissue during or after the preheating and cooling of the tissue.

Subsurface heating of material

A laser tissue treatment device capable of being handheld, the device comprising a semiconductor diode or diode array laser which emits energy and a device for surface cooling of tissue such that the energy is directed through said cooling device in contact with tissue. The diode laser operates at wavelengths between about 630 nm and 980 nm, and delivers a predetermined amount of energy in a predetermined period of time and having a predetermined spot size. The device utilizes one or more microlenses or microlens arrays to collimate the diode laser energy. Optionally, the device utilizes a deflecting optic for deflecting the diode laser energy through the cooling device which is in contact with tissue in which the deflecting optic is visually transparent such that the operator can see the tissue treatment area. A cooling device such as a sapphire plate or other active or passive cooling means is used to cool the tissue. A method for treatment of tissue, including hair removal, with a handheld device comprises generating laser energy from a semiconductor diode laser, directing the energy through a cooling device in contact with tissue, and treating tissue with the laser energy.
