A process for the electrochemical production of hydrogen from an aqueous alkaline electrolyte characterized by the use as a cathode of a material having the general formula AB.sub.5 H.sub.x wherein A is one or more of rare earth metals and calcium, B is nickel or cobalt and x is a number, generally from 4 to 8 characteristic of saturation of the AB.sub.5 -compound with hydrogen. The hydrogen is generated at a relatively low overpotential and thus at high efficiency.

Electrolytic production of hydrogen

A process for preparing hydrogen evolution cathodes comprises plasma spraying or flame spraying AB.sub.5 intermetallic compound powder alone or in association with nickel, nickel alloy or iron powder onto a steel or nickel substrate and thereafter reducing the sprayed substrate at a temperature of up to about 650.degree. C.

Process for preparing H.sub.2 evolution cathodes

A cathode for hydrogen evolution comprising a substrate stable in aqueous alkaline media having on the surface thereof a coating of particles of an AB.sub.N intermetallic, and optionally particles of a metal inert in the electrolyte, e.g., nickel, adhered to the substrate by sintered polytetrafluoroethylene or similar polymer.

Cathode for hydrogen evolution

A cathode for use in the electrochemical production of hydrogen and process for making it which involves direct electrochemical cathodic action on a thermally produced adherent oxide on a nickel cathode surface. Examples include a nickel sheet thermally oxidized in air at 600.degree. C. for one hour and used directly in the production of electrolytic hydrogen and an iron sheet plasma sprayed with nickel to provide a surface containing thermal oxidation product of nickel and again used directly in the electrolytic production of hydrogen.

Cathode for electrolytic production of hydrogen

An anode for oxygen evolution in alkaline electrolyte is provided. The electrode comprises an electrically conductive support surface having a porous metal layer adhered to at least part of it and having Ni(OH).sub.2 molecules deposited upon the surface and within the pores of the porous metal layer. A process for producing this anode is also provided.

Anode for oxygen evolution

An electroplating bath and process for producing a nickel-zinc alloy electrodeposit containing about 8% to 35% nickel characterized in that the bath is essentially a boric acid-containing sulfamate bath maintained at a pH of 2.5 to 4.0 and operated at a cathode current density of about 10 to 25 mA cm.sup.-2 and at a temperature of about 20.degree. C. to 70.degree. C.

Nickel-zinc alloy deposition from a sulfamate bath

A process for electrodepositing cadmium and selenium onto a material suitable for use as a photoelectrode in a photovoltaic cell. The plating electrolyte, in one embodiment, consists essentially of an acid citrate bath including hydrated citric acid, hydrated sodium citrate, hydrated cadmium chloride and selenious acid. The deposit may be subsequently heat treated.

Electrodeposition of cadmium-selenium semiconducting photoelectrodes

Discloses a process of water electrolysis of concentrated alkaline aqueous solutions at temperatures above 60.degree. C. and at anode current densities of at least about 125 mA/cm.sup.2 in which the anode comprises an iron-nickel alloy containing 30% to about 45% nickel.

An electrode for water electrolyzers comprising a steel base having a sintered porous layer of nickel, nickel-iron or iron on the steel base and having an electrochemically formed oxidic layer or hydrogen saturation associated with the sintered layer.
