A dilution air blower that has a reverse-mounted impeller contained within a combined blower housing and impeller housing. The impeller includes a vented backplate that is positioned to face a base opening of the blower housing that receives the exhaust gas from an appliance, such as a water heater. Rotation of the impeller causes the impeller to draw in a supply of dilution air which passes over the blower motor. The dilution air mixes with the exhaust gases within the mixing chamber of the impeller. The mixture of gases is discharged radially from the impeller through an exhaust outlet. The invention eliminates the need for fans dedicated to cool the blower motor while providing the required mixture of the exhaust gases and the dilution air.

Vented backplate impeller water heater blower and method of mixing dilution air

A blower unit is disclosed which seals atop a conventional water heater. The unit utilizes a one-piece housing divided into two chambers which are in fluid communication; the first chamber houses the impeller, while the second chamber houses the exhaust flue of the water heater. An inlet plate having an inlet opening is disposed between the two chambers. The blower motor is separated from the blower housing to prevent heated exhaust gases from heating the motor. During operation, dilution air and exhaust gases are drawn into the blower housing and mixed together to reduce the temperature of the exhaust gases. The gas mixture is then expelled from the unit via an exhaust outlet in the blower housing.

A blower housing body is disclosed comprising a housing body and housing cover. The housing body and housing cover are provided with mating surfaces that provide the ability to releasably lock the housing cover to the housing body to allow ease of disassembly for basic maintenance and re-assembly for continued use. The locking mechanism is accomplished by a ridge formed on the top of a side wall of the housing body and a corresponding channel in the housing cover.
