A poly(neopentylpolyol) ester composition is produced by reacting a neopentylpolyol having the formula: wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of CH, CHand CHOH and n is a number from 1 to 4, with at least one monocarboxylic acid having 2 to 15 carbon atoms in the presence of an acid catalyst and at an initial mole ratio of carboxyl groups to hydroxyl groups of greater than 0.5:1 to 0.95:1 to form a partially esterified poly(neopentylpolyol) composition. Then the partially esterified poly(neopentylpolyol) composition is reacted with additional monocarboxylic acid having 2 to 15 carbon atoms to form a final poly(neopentylpolyol) ester composition.

Production of polyol ester lubricants for refrigeration systems

Lubricant compositions comprising certain mixtures of esters of pentaerythritol, di-pentaerythritol, tri-pentaerythritol and higher pentaerythritol oligomers are ideally suited for use with COas refrigerant in heat transfer devices provided that at least 30% by weight of the esters are esters of pentaerythritol oligomers containing 4 or more pentaerythritol monomer units and wherein a majority of the alkylcarboxylate groups are straight chain Calkanoyl groups, such as n-pentanoyl. Said mixture of alkylcarboxylate esters are shown to not only have higher than expected viscosity and exceptional COmiscibility, but also possess excellent lubricity, film building properties and load bearing properties even as part of a lubricant/COsolution.

Refrigeration oil and compositions with carbon dioxide refrigerant

Polyol ester lubricant compositions comprising predominately straight chain Calkylcarboxlate esters of neopentyl alcohols, for example, straight chain Calkylcarboxlate esters of one or more of trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, di-pentaerythritol, tri-pentaerythritol or pentaerythritol oligomers, and working fluids comprising said lubricant compositions and a hydrocarbon refrigerant, suitable for heat transfer devices including refrigeration and air conditioning systems are provided. The polyol ester lubricant compositions have a kinematic viscosity at 40&#xb0; C. of 22-125 cSt and a viscosity index of greater than 140, and are characterized by having very high lubricity, excellent load carrying properties and excellent low temperature properties.

Refrigeration oil and compositions with hydrocarbon refrigerants

A polyol ester suitable for use as a lubricant or a lubricant base stock has a kinematic viscosity at 40&#xb0; C. greater than or equal to 200 cSt and a viscosity index of greater than or equal to 100. Lubricants for refrigeration systems

A polyol ester suitable for use as a lubricant or a lubricant base stock has a kinematic viscosity at 40&#xb0; C. less than or equal to 22 cSt and a viscosity index of greater than or equal to 140. The ester comprises a reaction product of (a) at least one polyhydric alcohol having at least 2 primary hydroxyl groups, (b) at least one monocarboxylic acid having 2 to 15 carbon atoms and (c) at least one polycarboxylic acid having 2 to 15 carbon atoms, wherein the number of acid groups derived from the polycarboxylic acid(s) is at least 25% of the total number of acid groups derived from the monocarboxylic and polycarboxylic acids.

A high viscosity synthetic ester base stock of about ISO 68 to 400 is formed from a neopentylpolyol condensed with at least one monocarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of linear acids having between 4 to 10 carbon atoms and branched chain acids having from 5 to 10 carbon atoms in an excess of hydroxyl to carboxylic acid groups to form a partial polyneopentylpolyol ester that is further reacted with the same or similar acid to form a high viscosity polyneopentylpolyol ester. Lubricants formed from the base stocks have satisfactory miscibility with standard highly or fully fluorinated refrigeration fluids.

High viscosity synthetic ester lubricant base stock

A novel biodegradable polyneopentyl polyol (PNP) ester based synthetic ester basestock that includes a PNP ester admixed with a dicarboxylic acid ester coupling agent is provided. The PNP ester-coupling agent mixture is blended further with minor amounts of a single, or mixture of, additional high molecular weight linear or branched chain ester. The final basestocks are compatible with standard lubricant additive packages and miscible with gasoline to provide biodegradable lubricants that have improved viscosity characteristics, good low temperature properties, and improved lubricity for 2-stroke engine lubricant applications.

Biodegradable polyneopentyl polyol based synthetic ester blends and lubricants thereof

A synthetic lubricant composition is a blend of a polyol ester admixed with effective amounts of an antioxidant, yellow metal pacifier and rust inhibitors. The polyol ester blend includes a major proportion of poly(neopentyl polyol) ester blend formed by reacting poly(pentaerythritol) partial esters with at least one C7 to C12 carboxylic acid mixed with an ester formed by reacting a polyol having at least two hydroxyl groups and at least one C8-C10 carboxylic acid. Preferably, the acids are linear and avoid those which can cause odors during use. Effective additives include secondary arylamine antioxidants, triazole derivative yellow metal pacifier and an amino acid derivative and substituted primary and secondary amine and/or diamine rust inhibitor.

Poly(neopentyl polyol) ester based coolants and improved additive package

Improved synthetic lubricants based on a 100% polyol ester composition suitable for use in high temperature static chain oil applications is provided. The lubricant includes a base stock based on a polyol ester that is the reaction product of a neopentyl polyol including a major proportion of dipentaerythritol and a mixture of C to C carboxylic acids. The preferred carboxylic acid mixture includes heptanoic (C ) acid, caprylic/capric (C ) acid and isononanoic (3, 5, 5-trimethylhyxanoic acid (iso-C ). The polyol base stock is mixed with an additive package that includes a viscosity index improver (tackifier), antioxidants, extreme pressure/antiwear agents and a corrosion inhibitor. The additive package may be added in up to about 20 percent by weight of the lubricant to provide a viscosity of the lubricant at 40&deg; C. of at least about 275 cSt and at 100&deg; C. of no less than about 25.0 cSt.

High temperature lubricant composition

A synthetic lubricant composition is a blend of a polyol ester blend admixed with effective amounts of an antioxidant, yellow metal pacifier and rust inhibitors. The polyol ester blend includes a major proportion of poly(neopentyl polyol) ester blend formed by reacting poly(pentaerythritol) with at least one C.sub.7 to C.sub.12 carboxylic acid mixed with an ester formed by reacting a polyol having at least two hydroxyl groups and at least one C.sub.8 -C.sub.10 carboxylic acid. Preferably, the acids are linear and avoid those which can cause odors during use. Effective additives include secondary arylamine antioxidants, triozole derivative yellow metal pacifier and an amino acid derivative and substituted primary and secondary amine and/or diamine rust inhibitor.

A synthetic ester base stock having reduced deposit formation which comprises the reaction product of technical pentaerythritol and a mixture of carboxylic acids. The mixture of carboxylic acids comprises (1) at least one C.sub.8 -C.sub.10 carboxylic acid having 6 or less reactive hydrogens, (2) at least one C.sub.5 -C.sub.7 carboxylic acid having 6 or less reactive hydrogens and (3) at least one C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 carboxylic acid having 6 or more reactive hydrogens.

Technical pentaerythritol esters as lubricant base stock

An improved synthetic ester lubricant base stock formed by reacting at least one of trimethylolpropane and monopentaerythritol with a mixture of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids is provided. The mixture of acids including straight-chain acids having from 5 to 10 carbon atoms and an iso-acid having from 6 to 10 carbon atoms, preferably iso-nonanoic acid. The base stock is mixed with a conventional ester lubricant additive package to form a lubricant having a viscosity at 210.degree. F. of at leasts 5.0 centistokes and pour point of at least as low as -65.degree. F. The resulting lubricants have a decreased tendency to form deposits in gas turbine engines.

Additionally, a method for providing hydrolytically stable turbine oils which comprises adding a combination of a selected tertiary-butylphenyl phosphate and a selected alkyl amine to a synthetic ester base oil.
