A boss for a pressure vessel has a flange. The flange includes an interior keyway having an inner sidewall and a plurality of bores disposed on the inner sidewall. A pressure vessel includes a main body section and an end section. The end section includes a boss and the boss includes a flange. The flange includes an interior keyway having an inner sidewall and a plurality of bores disposed on the inner sidewall. In another aspect, a pressure vessel includes an outer shell, and inner liner and a boss including a flange with an exterior side and an interior side. The liner is mechanically integrated with the flange via a plurality of anchors, each anchor contacting the flange only on the interior side. A method of forming a pressure vessel includes providing a boss having a flange. The flange has an interior keyway having an inner sidewall and a plurality of bores disposed on the inner sidewall. The method comprises allowing a fluid polymer material to flow into the interior keyway and into the plurality of bores.

Pressure vessel boss and liner interface

A compressed gas vehicle fuel storage system comprised of a plurality of compressed gas pressure cells supported by shock-absorbing bumpers positioned within a low cost, shape-conforming container. The container is dimensioned relative to the compressed gas pressure cells whereby a radial air gap surrounds each compressed gas pressure cell. The radial air gap allows pressure-induced expansion of the pressure cells without resulting in the application of pressure to adjacent pressure cells or physical pressure to the container. The pressure cells are interconnected by a gas control assembly including a thermally activated pressure relief device, a manual safety shut-off valve, and means for connecting the fuel storage system to a vehicle power source and a refueling adapter. The gas control assembly is enclosed by a protective cover attached to the container. The system is attached to the vehicle with straps to enable the chassis to deform as intended in a high-speed collision.

Low cost, compressed gas fuel storage system

Compressed gas fuel storage system

A boss is disposed in a polar opening in a pressure vessel which has a filament wound outer shell and a non-metallic internal liner. The boss has a tubular neck which projects outwardly from the vessel interior and an annular support flange which extends radially from the internal end of the neck and supports the perimeter of the polar opening. An offset attachment flange extends radially from the support flange and has two axially opposed surfaces with locking grooves formed therein. Each locking groove has a bottom wall intermediate a pair of mutually skewed sidewalls for maintaining positive engagement with and retention of complementary respective tabs on the liner. In an application where the liner is a blow molded component, an injection molded interface member is attached to the support flange and provides a site at which the liner is welded.
