In some embodiments, a user interface displayed by a first electronic device is navigated with a first mode of navigation when touch input at a touch-sensitive surface of a second electronic device satisfies one or more criteria, and is navigated with a second mode of navigation when touch input at the touch-sensitive surface does not satisfy the one or more criteria.

Navigating user interfaces with multiple navigation modes

Receiving and processing out-of-band (OOB) data along with a media stream is disclosed. The received OOB data can be extracted from an OOB data stream and correlated with the media stream using timestamps. Display and other operations can then be performed when a timestamp of the OOB data matches a current timestamp of the media stream. In addition, timestamp notification requests can be received and processed such that when the current timestamp of the media stream matches a requested timestamp, a notification can be transmitted, and data can be received in response to the notification.

Synchronizing out-of-band content with a media stream

According to one embodiment, a method includes obtaining a media composition for display on an electronic display device is obtained. The media composition includes a plurality of layers, with each layer including a visual element. The method also includes selecting at least some of the layers of the media composition to have a parallax effect applied thereto and determining an amount of total parallax effect to apply to the selected layers. Also, the method includes determining an appropriate amount of offset to apply to each of the selected layers on an individual basis and shifting the selected layers in one or more directions by their respective appropriate amounts. Moreover, the method includes displaying the media composition showing the parallax effect on the electronic display device.

Stacked media elements with selective parallax effects

Time-based events and other metadata that can be added to a media stream to enable downstream systems to enhance the viewing experience are disclosed. The events are given time attributes that establish their location in the media stream so that regardless of where the playhead is located within the media stream, the events that are active at that point in time can be identified and synchronized with the playhead. In addition, a master clock can be used to update a stream timeline associated with the media stream to account for differences between the expected and actual duration of advertisements inserted into the media stream.

Synchronizing content and metadata

A user interface presented on a local display eases user discrimination between multiple remote displays connected to a remotely controlled computer, thereby easing selection of remote display(s) for remote viewing on the local display. The user interface can incorporate information indicating physical positional orientations of remote displays relative to each other, such as whether one remote display is physically located to the left of another remote display. The icons can additionally illustrate sizes of the remote displays relative to each other. Each remote display can be represented within a particular user interface icon as a rectangle whose size and position relative to the other remote display(s) reflect that remote display's actual physical size and position relative to those other remote display(s). Different icons can show different subsets of active and inactive remote monitors, and can be selected to activate different subsets of remote monitors for presentation on the local display.
