A videokeratograph has a placido disc with rings concentric about a central axis, a center positioned on the central axis, and an observation opening at the center. A plurality of fixation points are positioned in the placido disc spaced from the center opening and distributed circumferentially around the central axis, whereby rings on the placido disc spaced from the center are reflected from the central zone of the cornea. A video camera positioned on the center axis behind the placido disc observes an image of the placido disc reflected from the cornea. A processor coupled to the video camera determines the shape of the central zone of the cornea.

Disclosed is a lamp apparatus designed for both bleaching teeth and curing dental restorative materials. Both bleaching and curing modes of operation may be used in at least three different power levels designated as boost, ramp, and normal. The lamp apparatus contains a incandescent xenon-halogen bulb and a dichroic reflector which focuses filtered visible light on the end of a flexible light guide which is part a handpiece for directing the transmitted light by the light guide to a tooth being treated. The lamp apparatus employs a slave microprocessor in a control panel mountable at different positions on a housing for the xenon-halogen bulb and a master microprocessor within the housing which is detachably connected to the slave microprocessor.

An apparatus assists a user of a placido-based eye observation system to place the placido at an optimum distance from an observed eye. A light source is configured as a point source. The light source and a CCD camera are attached to the placido at opposed locations that are spaced from the viewing axis, but symmetric with respect to it. Light is emitted by the source towards the eye, and reflected by the apex of the cornea of the eye on the main axis. The reflected source light appears in the field of view of the CCD camera as a bright point image. The location of the point image within the field of view informs how far away the eye is from the placido. The placido is moved until the point image is positioned within the field of view at a reference position. In a manual embodiment a screen shows what is in the field of view, and an operator looks at the screen and uses a joystick to control movement of the placido. In an automated embodiment a computer analyzes the field of view, determines the position of the point image, and drives a closed loop system to maintain the distance at the optimum value.

Multi-focal prescription composite lenses having at least two corrections are made by adhering a first-part lens having a predetermined positive or negative diopter correction realized by a cylinder correction prescription on a rear surface and a preselected front surface, to a second-part lens having a predetermined prescription correction at a portion of a front surface and a preselected rear surface that is complimentary to the front surface of the first lens. A lens attachment feature, normally a tab, is integral with at least one of the first- and second-part lens, and persists in the multi-focal prescription composite lens. An eyeglass frame has and presents a complimentary feature, normally a channel within a front piece to the frame, that engages and holds the multi-focal prescription lens to the frame at an adjustable pupillary distance. Two composite lenses are assembled, and permanently mounted in and to the frame, totally without power tools. The second-part lens of each composite lens may optionally be tinted, treated, or, in particular, polaroid. Lens surrounds help disguise the substantial round appearance of the composite lenses in the hand-assembled multi-focal prescription eyeglasses.

An amphibious vehicle, normally an automobile, has a centrally located displacement hull body portion, containing a passenger compartment and an engine, that is of excellent hydrodynamic profile similar to a canoe. Wheels located at the end of four-wheel-drive axle half-shafts in, preferably, a DeDion suspension are located entirely outboard of the displacement hull. The wheels are conventionally suspended in their lowered positions on land, and are raised by actuators on water. Moveable skis first move on a pantograph linkage from first locations upwards and to the rear of the front wheels into second, forward, locations where the ski tips slide under the raised front wheels, deflecting water under the front wheels and generally improving vehicle hydrodynamics in the manner of outriggers. With increasing speed of the vehicle through the water, the skis are moved aft and downward on the pantograph linkage to lowered third locations. There, along with the aft portion of the displacement hull, they present surfaces upon which the amphibious automobile may rise onto plane upon the surface of the water, typically obtaining speeds of 35+ knots.

Hydrofoil watercraft (HFWC)--particularly including extended-performance hydrofoil watercraft (E-P HFWC) characterized by a submerged demi-hull mounting hydrofoils, and also high-performance personal hydrofoil watercraft (P HFWC)--are rendered both tractable and pleasant to operate throughout broad operational ranges by the provision of selective upwards (i) flotation and (ii) planing forces from two sponsons moveable in position at the ends of hinged arms. At their maximally elevated, inboard, positions the sponsons are integrated with the contours of the main displacement hull--preferably a 'V'-shape hull--so as to permit the HFWC to operate efficiently and handle well while not on plane, including while cutting through heavy seas. In their intermediary, or outboard, positions the sponsons serve to (i) stabilize the hull while the HFWC is stopped or moving slowly while (ii) providing planning surfaces that aid the HFWC to first come up smoothly onto a first plane, and then, at still higher speeds, smoothly onto a second plane on its primary hydrofoils. Once the HFWC is on its second, or hydrofoil, plane, the sponsons as well as the displacement hull are completely out of the water, reducing drag. In yet a third, maximally submersed, position the sponsons extend below and protect the hydrofoils and the propulsion, typically a propeller, so as to thereby permit safe operation of the HFWC in shallow water or during beaching.

A first light is moved and illuminated by an x-y plotter mechanism on a rear projection screen under computer control so as to be continuously fixated by an eye of a test subject. The computer also causes one or ones of fixed-position second lights, typically sixteen in number positioned in a regular array, to momentarily illuminate at various times corresponding to various positions of the moving first light. The test subject indicates detection or non-detection of the momentary illuminations to the computer by voicing the numbers '1', '2', '3', etc. From successive illuminations and test subject responses the computer is able to survey the entire visual field of each subject's eye in all directions. The surveyed visual field is plotted on graph paper with the same x-y plotter mechanism that is otherwise and at other times used for moving the first light source.
