A mechanical rotary coupler for first and second coral shafts having slotted ends proximate one another, the coupler being formed of an elongated blade of resilient material longitudinally slit and folded on itself transverse to the slit to provide first and second resilient V-shaped strips connected by bridging portions at the ends of the blade, the strips respectively being adapted to engage the slots in the ends of the first and second shafts at regions on the strips spaced from the bridging portions.

Furnace fan control

A furnace control apparatus for a downflow forced warm air furnace uses a microprocessor and thermostat to initiate and control the start-up of the furnace. During the initial start-up operation, the microprocessor receives an input signal from the thermostat indicative of the need for a furnace operation and produces an output signal for controlling, in combination with the thermostat which responds to the temperature of the space to be heated, an actuation of a gas valve to supply gas to the furnace. Subsequently, an analog temperature sensor in an air supply duct is used to supply another input signal through an analog-to-digital converter to the microprocessor representative of the air temperature in the duct. The microprocessor stores the value of the air temperature following the start-up of the burner and subsequently turns on an air circulator. Following the energization of the air circulator, the microprocessor determines via a fixed logic sequence whether the delivered air temperature rises a minimum amount above the stored initial temperature after a preset time period as an indication of a circulator failure. Additionally, the analog temperature sensor is used by the microprocessor to determine if the delivered air temperature ultimately rises above a predetermined high or maximum limit an an indication of a restriction in an air return duct. In either case of the delivered air temperature not meeting aforesaid criteria, the microprocessor deactuates the gas valve to interrupt the flow of gas to the burner to protect the heating system.

Furnace control apparatus having a circulator failure detection circuit

A defrost control system for a reverse cycle refrigeration system wherein the outdoor coil is defrosted as a function of the operation of a demand type control for initiating the defrost mode of operation. The control system further includes a means for monitoring the frequency of defrost cycles. If too frequent defrosting is detected then the demand system is overriden and subsequent defrosting occurs only after the heat pump has been operating in the normal heating mode of operation for a predetermined length of time.

A defrost control system for a reverse cycle refrigeration system wherein the outdoor coil is defrosted when outdoor coil temperature is equal to or less than the product of a preselected constant N.sub.1 and the outdoor air temperature and controller means are provided to calculate a new value of N.sub.1 after each defrost operation, the calculation being based on stabilized values of outdoor air temperature and outdoor coil temperature for clear coil conditions.

A high voltage transformer is formed by a unitary core mounting a primary winding being inserted in a cavity of a bobbin that mounts the secondary winding. The secondary winding is placed in alternate bays of a multibay structure to isolate the windings from one another to avoid high potential breakdown. The assembly is complete by the mounting of the core within the cavity of the bobbin, but can be supplemented by covering the entire unit with a protective housing that further aids in mounting the transformer to an insulating surface, such as a printed wiring board.

Defrost control system for refrigeration system

An evaporator coil defrost control system for a refrigeration system comprising refrigerant compression means, a condenser coil, an evaporator coil, and an electric motor operated fan positioned adjacent to said evaporator coil and adapted, when energized, to blow air through said evaporator coil, said defrost control system comprising: strain sensing means connected to said fan blades and adapted to measure force applied to said fan and to produce a signal indicative of said measured force; controller means connected to said strain sensing means to receive the signal therefrom and having operative connections to said system, said controller being adapted to place said system in a defrost mode of operation upon said signal of said strain sensing means having a characteristic indicative of a significant frost build-up on said evaporator coil.

A control system for a reverse cycle refrigeration system for controlling the defrosting of the outdoor coil thereof on a cost effective basis; the control system comprising a controller means receiving inputs indicative of the temperature of the outdoor coil, and the operation of the compressor means; the controller means having a timing function which is initiated upon the outdoor coil temperature being at or below a preselected value and the compressor means being operated; the duration of the timing function being determined on a substantially continuous basis as a function of the magnitude of the outdoor coil temperature; and the controller means having an operative connection to the system so as to, upon completion of the timing function, place the reverse cycle refrigeration system into an outdoor coil defrost mode of operation.

A compressor fault detection and control system for a reverse cycle refrigeration system for detecting faulty compressor operation and for controlling the system in response to the detection of a fault by inhibiting the compressor and for providing a fault indication, the control system comprising a controller means receiving inputs indicative of the outdoor coil temperature, the temperature of the compressor discharge refrigerant, and an output indicative of a demand from an enclosed space temperature sensing means for heating or cooling of the enclosed space. The controller means also includes timing means and means for comparing the value of the compressor discharge temperature and the value of the outdoor coil temperature. Further, the controller means has an operative connection to control means for controlling the operation of the compressor and functioning, after the compressor has been operating for a preselected time interval, to inhibit any further operation of the compressor means unless the value of the compressor discharge temperature is greater than the value of the outdoor coil temperature plus a preselected constant value.

The controller means also includes timing means and means for comparing the value of the outdoor heat exchanger coil refrigerant temperature and the value of the outdoor air temperature. Further, the controller means has an operative connection to control means for controlling the operation of the compressor and functioning to inhibit any further operation of the compressor means unless the value of the difference between the temperature of the outdoor heat exchanger refrigerant and the temperature of the outdoor air is less than a first preselected value when the thermostat requests heating, and unless said difference exceeds a second preselected value when the thermostat requests cooling.
