The top and bottom felts at the web transfer between two dryer sections in a single tier papermaking dryer are spaced by pivoting the vacuum roll over which the felt and web move. The vacuum roll is mounted to two pivot arms which are driven by inflatable air rides to alternately incline the roll toward the downstream felt, forming a sandwich of the two felts and the web, and to a spaced position. The short motion of the vacuum roll allows standard felt stretchers to be used, and permits rapid adjustment of the felt spacing.

A controlled deflection roll has a roll shell which is hydrostatically radially supported by internally disposed hydrostatic shoes. In order to axially position the roll shell, a mechanical locating link is provided which is disposed externally of the roll shell. The link is coupled at one end to an element attached to the roll shell, and is coupled at an opposite end to a fixed support, such as a floor stand. The end of the roll at which the locating link is disposed is thus axially fixed, while the opposite end of the roll remains free to float. The locating link can be connected to an oscillator to oscillate the roll shell axially during operation so as to distribute any non-uniformities in the roll shell and thus to mitigate their effect on the sheet.

Self loading controlled deflection roll

A controlled deflection roll for a papermaking machine. The roll includes a roll shaft having a longitudinal axis, a roll shell surrounding the shaft, and a bearing pad assembly supported on the shaft to supportingly engage the shell and move the shell translationally relative to the shaft in a plane including the axis. In one embodiment, the bearing pad assembly includes a plurality of bearing pads. Each bearing pad is spaced apart in the cross-machine direction and has a contact surface engageable with the inner surface of the shell. The contact surface is in the shape of a parallelogram and defines therein at least one recess. The side edges of adjacent bearing pads are straight and parallel to each other and define gaps therebetween. The gaps do not extend along a plane which is perpendicular to the axis. In another embodiment, the bearing pad assembly includes at least one bearing pad having a contact surface and opposite edges. The contact surface has a contact surface portion engageable with the shell. The contact surface portion has a plurality of continuous contact surface portions extending between the opposite edges such that each of said continuous contact surface portions does not extend in a plane which is perpendicular to said axis. The roll further includes a hydraulic assembly independently actuating the plurality of bearing pads to selectively engage the shell and supplying lubricant between the support surfaces and the shell. A pressure profile and a temperature profile are created along the length of the shell. The bearing pads engage the shell such that the pressure profile and the temperature profile are substantially evenly distributed along the length of said shell.

Controlled deflection roll bearing pad

A web support foil positioned adjacent to a Yankee dryer above a creping doctor. The foil supports the web as it leaves the dryer. Mounted to the top of the foil is an adjustable air deflector which is positioned tangent to the Yankee dryer. The air deflector blocks air moving along the web. A slotted opening draws air from a leading-edge pocket collecting fibers which are broken loose during the creping action. The web is held against the bottom side of the foil by one or more air jets which are directed over the bottom surface on the foil. The jets of air function as coanda air jets and prevent the web from sticking to the bottom surface of the foil while creating a Bernoulli effect which holds the web against the bottom of the foil.

A non-self loading controlled deflection roll for a papermaking machine having a machine direction and a cross-machine direction, the roll including a shaft support member, first and second shell support members, a roll shaft having a longitudinal axis in the cross-machine direction, the shaft having axially spaced first and second ends, a roll shell surrounding the shaft, the shell having axially spaced first and second ends, the shell being rotatable about the shaft, a bearing pad supporting the shell relative to the shaft, the bearing pad being located between the first and second ends of the shell, first and second outboard bearings supporting the shaft relative to the shaft support member adjacent the first and second ends, respectively, first and second spherical bushings supporting the shell relative to the shaft, the first and second spherical bushings being mounted on the shaft axially inwardly of the first and second outboard bearings, respectively, each of the spherical bushings having a first annular bushing member supporting the respective first and second shell support members and a second annular bushing member mounted on the shaft, the first and second annular bushing members having complementary spherical engagement surfaces, and first and second outboard shoe assemblies.

Non-self loading controlled deflection roll

A single tier drying section is disclosed for drying a web. The drying section includes a dryer and a felt guided about the dryer such that the web is disposed between the dryer and the felt for drying a first side of the web. A further dryer is disposed downstream relative to the dryer and a further felt is guided about the further dryer such that the web is disposed between the further dryer and the further felt for drying a second side of the web. A dryer transfer mechanism is used for transferring the web from the dryer to the further dryer.

Apparatus for drying a web

A hydrostatic self-loading controlled deflection roll has a central, hydraulically operated shoe which extends substantially the entire cross-machine width of the rotating roll shell, and two outboard shoes disposed, in the cross-machine direction, outside of the nip loading zone. The use of the outboard shoes permits the use of a single, full-length nip shoe within the nip loading zone, which simplifies control and provides for more uniform temperature distribution. The outboard shoes also provide better crown control. The outboard shoes are preferably disposed within a head flange area of the roll, at the location where spherical bearings would normally be present in a conventional roll. A bearing ring is disposed axially outside of the head flange and around a portion of a bearing box at either end of the roll for rotatably supporting the roll shell about bearings in the bearing box. A barrier seal is disposed between the stationary roll shaft and the roll shell intermediate the bearings and outboard shoes.

Hydrostatic self-loading controlled deflection roll

A calender employs an open-stack like arrangement with a single vertical beam or support column on each end of the calender. In combination with the support beam, a special swing link is used to support tension loads on the open side of the calender. The nip is thus straddled by structural members between the support column and the link. This combination has the ability to support high linear nip loads, as high as 3,000 PLI or higher. The link has pin connections at both ends so that when one pin is removed, the link can be swung open for roll removal or accessibility. Thus, the strength of the closed-stack calender is combined with the visibility and ease of access of the open-stack calender by the employment of tension links which replace one of the support columns utilized in a closed-stack calender.

High nip load calender

A self-loading controlled deflection roll has movable shoes disposed inside the roll shell, at the opposite ends and at the center of a central shaft, for displacing the external surface of the roll shell toward and away from a mating roll forming a nip with the controlled deflection roll. In order to ensure that both ends of the controlled deflection roll shell move evenly in a radial direction into nipping engagement with the mating roll, and to also ensure that the ends retract evenly away from nip engagement, a control system and method are provided for automatically adjusting the flow of hydraulic fluid, such as oil, which is used to displace the shoes at the opposite end of the central shaft. The control system and method make use of a mechanical linkage which is operated by movement responsive displacement of the shoes, the linkage positioning relatively movable parts of a control valve so as to increase or decrease the flow of hydraulic fluid to the respective end shoes, thereby ensuring that the end shoes move uniformly relative to each other.

Equal lift self-loading controlled deflection roll and method for

An extended nip press apparatus is disclosed for removing water from a web. The apparatus includes a rotatable backing roll and an elongate shoe which cooperate with the backing roll for defining therebetween an extended nip for the passage therethrough of the web. The shoe defines a concave surface. A bearing blanket is movably disposed between the backing roll and the concave surface. The arrangement is such that the web is supported by the blanket with the web being disposed between the blanket and the backing roll. A lubricant is supplied between the concave surface and the blanket such that the blanket is slidingly supported by the concave surface during passage of the blanket through the extended nip. The concave surface encompasses a pocket defined by the shoe. The arrangement is such that the pocket is filled with lubricant flowing from the concave surface so that in the event of a wad of the web entering into the extended nip, the wad is yieldingly received within the pocket so that damage to the blanket by the wad is minimized.

A self-loading controlled deflection roll for forming a controlled pressure nip with another roll along a nip line with a hollow rotatable roll shell rotatable on an axis and a roll shaft extending through the shell and radially supporting the shell along the nip line with axially facing surfaces on the shaft and rollers rolling on said surfaces supported on the rotating roll shell accommodating bending of the roll shaft relative to the roll shell fixing their relative axial positions. One roller is axially fixed and the other roller is mounted on a rocker arm loaded with the piston and cylinder.
