An engine with a variable valve device includes cylinders each provided with a plurality of intake valves, an outer camshaft for driving first intake cams, an inner camshaft arranged coaxially with the outer camshaft for driving second intake cams, and a cam phase change mechanism arranged at one end of the outer and inner camshafts and capable of varying the phase difference between the two camshafts. A first cam sensor for detecting the rotational angle of the outer camshaft and a second cam sensor for detecting the rotational angle of the inner camshaft are arranged close to the one end of the camshafts.

A variable valve device of the invention has a structure in which, as connecting means for connecting a movable camlocated in an outer periphery of an outer camshaftand an inner camshaftlocated inside the outer camshaft, there are provided a pin-like memberthat is movably inserted so as to penetrate the movable cam, the outer camshaftand the inner camshaftalong a diametrical direction of a shaft memberthat is formed by turnably encasing the inner camshaftin the outer camshaft, and an escape-preventing portiondisposed in the end portion of the pin-like member. The movable camand the inner camshaftare thus connected together while preventing large press-fit load and axial force from acting on components.

Variable valve device for an internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine includes: a variable valve train mechanism, configured to receive a cam displacement of an inlet cam so as to vary a driving output for driving an inlet valve continuously from a maximum valve lift to a minimum valve lift so as to match the driving output with a running condition of the internal combustion engine; and a control part, configured to control the variable valve train mechanism so as to set a valve lift of the inlet valve to a starter valve lift when starting the internal combustion engine in a cold state. The starter valve lift is formed so that a valve opening period of the inlet valve is set to encompass an overall area of an induction stroke period of the internal combustion engine from a top dead center to a bottom dead center of the induction stroke period.

A variable valve train system for an internal combustion engine wherein the engagement section of a transmission mechanism is lubricated by means of an existing part for driving a variable valve actuation mechanism. Gears forming the engagement section of the transmission mechanism are arranged at a position where the engagement section is lubricated with a lubricant scattered from an endless elongate member for driving a camshaft. The transmission mechanism can therefore be lubricated without the need for additional use of a lubricant passage and its associated elements, besides the existing parts for driving the variable valve actuation mechanism.
