Provided is a method of manufacturing a glass roll (GR), including: a conveying step of conveying a band-shaped glass film (G) in a lateral conveying direction by a conveying device (); and a roll-up step of rolling up the glass film (G) into a roll shape. The conveying step includes an inspection step of measuring a state of each of end portions (Gd, Ge) in a width direction of the glass film (G) by a detection unit () under a state in which a tension is applied to the glass film (G) that passes through an intermediate conveying region (MS) of the conveying device () by a tension applying portion.

Production method for glass roll

A glass roll includes a glass film formed by a downdraw method. The glass film is wound into a roll using a winding roller in a state in which front and back glass surfaces of the glass film formed in the forming operation are exposed, and during the winding operation, the glass film is superposed on a separable protective sheet. The protective sheet extends beyond both sides in a width direction of the glass film. The protective sheet can further be wound on an outer peripheral surface of the glass film by winding only the protective sheet from a trailing end of the glass film in a winding direction of the glass film.

A glass roll reliably prevents a glass film from breaking from an end surface of the glass film as an origin of breakage. The glass roll is formed by winding the glass film into a roll while superposing the glass film on a protective sheet. The glass film is formed by an overflow downdraw method to have a thickness of 1 &#x3bc;m or more and 200 &#x3bc;m or less, and has each end surface in a width direction formed as a cut surface cut by laser splitting.

A manufacturing method for a glass roll includes forming a glass film by a downdraw method, winding the glass film into a roll using a winding roller in a state in which front and back glass surfaces of the glass film formed in said forming operation are exposed, and during said winding operation, superposing the glass film on a separable protective sheet. A manufacturing apparatus for a thin glass sheet includes a forming member main body configured to form the thin glass sheet by fusing together, at a lower end portion of the forming member main body, streams of molten glass, which have overflown from an overflow trough to both sides of the forming member main body, under a state in which the streams of the molten glass are caused to flow down along outer surface portions having a substantially wedge shape. The manufacturing apparatus also includes a pair of covering members fitted onto both widthwise end portions of the forming member main body, respectively, the pair of covering members forming restricting wall portions for restricting widthwise spread of the streams of the molten glass flowing down along the outer surface portions of the forming member main body.

Manufacturing apparatus for a thin glass sheet

Provided is a glass roll utilizing a flanged roll core, and reliably inhibiting a glass film from breaking from an end portion in a width direction thereof as an origin of breakage. A glass roll () is formed by winding a glass film () and a cushion sheet (), under a state of being superposed, around a roll core () including a flange () at each end portion thereof, in which an end portion in a width direction of the glass film () is separated from the flange () on each side in the width direction of the glass film (), and the cushion sheet () is extended beyond the end portion in the width direction of the glass film () to the flange () side, to thereby form an extension portion ().

A process produces a glass sheet. The process includes down-drawing a molten glass into a sheet-like glass ribbon, in which the molten glass is fed to a forming trough arranged in a forming furnace and the molten glass is caused to flow down from the forming trough through a conveyance passage extending vertically. The process also includes removing an internal strain in the glass ribbon in an annealing furnace, cooling the glass ribbon to around room temperature, and cutting the glass ribbon in a given size, in which a pressure in an outside atmosphere of the forming furnace and/or the annealing furnace is elevated.

Process and apparatus for producing glass sheet

A process produces a glass sheet. The process includes down-drawing a molten glass into a sheet-like glass ribbon, in which the molten glass is fed to a forming trough arranged in a forming furnace and the molten glass is caused to flow down from the forming trough through a conveyance passage extending vertically. The process also includes removing an internal strain in the glass ribbon in an annealing furnace, cooling the glass ribbon to around room temperature in a cooling chamber, and cutting the glass ribbon into a given size, in which the cooling chamber is provided with a gas exhausting passage, thereby exhausting air in the cooling chamber to an outside.

Provided is a glass roll formed by winding a glass film into a roll, in which a minimum winding radius of the glass film is optimized. Thus, the glass film is reliably prevented from breaking due to static fatigue, and is able to be stored for long periods. A glass roll (), which is formed by winding a glass film () into a roll, has a configuration in which the glass film has a minimum winding radius (R) satisfying the following relation: R&#x2267;(T/2)[(2.3/&#x3c3;)&#xd7;E&#x2212;1], where &#x3c3; represents flexural strength of the glass film () obtained by a 3-point bending test, T represents a thickness of the glass film, and E represents a Young's modulus of the glass film.
